Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity to join our expanding team within the department of Sedation and Special Care Dentistry at Guy's Hospital. Applications are invited for a Full time Specialty Dentist post. We invite applications for dentists developing their experience and considering future specialty training in special care dentistry. The appointee will deliver a comprehensive sedation and special care dentistry service for adult patients. Applicants must have full GDC registration and experience in providing special care dentistry for adult patients under a range of conscious sedation techniques. The successful applicant will be expected to develop the department's clinical services and take an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate training. As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends. Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Oral health care for individuals referred to the Department including those who are medically compromised, people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, sensory impairments, mental health problems and/or dental anxiety or phobia
  • Treatment of patients presenting complex medical and/or management problems who are unsuitable for treatment outside a hospital environment
  • Treatment of patients requiring comprehensive dental care under conscious sedation or general anaesthesia
  • Clinical supervision of dental hygienists/therapists and junior staff
  • Clinical supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Teaching

  • If required clinically relevant teaching of conscious sedation techniques and special care dentistry to undergraduate and postgraduate students, dental staff, therapists, hygienists and dental nurses

Administration

  • The post holder will be required to assist senior staff in the management of the sedation and special care clinical services and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Clinical Audit and Research

  • The post holder will be expected to contribute to departmental audit and research activities.

Other

  • The list of duties and responsibilities given above is not an exhaustive list and the Specialty Dentist may be asked to undertake other duties in line with the overall purpose and nature of the post as may be required from time to time.

This job description reflects core activities of a post at a particular time. The Trust expects that all staff will recognise this and adopt a flexible approach to work. The normal working hours are 8.30 - 17.30 but flexibility is required, and it may be necessary to work outside of these hours to maximise efficient use of facilities.

Person Specification Qualifications / Education
  • BDS or equivalent.
  • FDS/MFDS/MJDF
Professional / Statutory Registration
  • Full Registration with UK GDC
  • GDC Specialist List in Special Care Dentistry (or with 6 months of obtaining a CCST)
Academic Achievements
  • Journal Publications
  • Presentations (Oral/Poster)
Clinical Experience
  • Experience in provision of dental treatment for patients under conscious sedation
  • Experience in the provision of dental care for patients requiring special care dentistry
  • Experience in the dental management of medically complex patients
Skills / Knowledge / Ability
  • Competence in behaviour management techniques, inhalation & intravenous sedation
  • Competence in the management of patients requiring special care dentistry
  • Provision of dental care under general anaesthesia
  • Knowledge of Research Methods
Audit
  • Evidence of participation in quality improvement projects
  • Good understanding of the principles of clinical audit
Teaching Experience
  • Experience in supervision of dental colleagues
  • Teaching and/or supervision at undergraduate level
  • Teaching skills course or qualification
Additional skills
  • Ability to work as part of a multiprofessional team
  • Good verbal and communication skills
  • Commitment to uphold GSTT Values
