Specialty Doctor in Sexual Health and HIV

Part-time (8 Programmed Activities per week - 32 hours)

Applications are invited for the post of a part-time Specialty Doctor in the fully integrated Sexual Health and HIV service based at Beckenham Beacon Sexual Health Centre.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic multidisciplinary team and will be integral to our ongoing programme of service improvements. In addition to delivering a busy clinical service, the department has an active teaching and training programme, which the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to and help develop.

Applicants must have at least four years of postgraduate experience, including experience within an integrated Sexual Health and HIV service. Candidates must possess the skills and experience to provide a wide range of sexual health and contraceptive services, and must hold full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to clinical excellence and multidisciplinary teamwork. Enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring junior medical and nursing staff is essential, along with the flexibility to engage in service development initiatives.

Main duties of the job

As a senior employee of the Trust, you will work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical, professional, and managerial colleagues in providing high-quality healthcare to the Trust's patients. Integral to these responsibilities are the following:

  • The provision of a first-class sexual and reproductive health service
  • Medical support for the HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team
  • Effective support and leadership for staff engaged in the specialty
  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London
  • Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
  • Conducting clinical practice in line with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, Care Group, or the Trust

The 8 Programmed Activities (PAs) will be divided as follows:
7 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 PA for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide a comprehensive service for patients in collaboration with colleagues. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties to support the effective functioning of the Care Group.
  • Deliver care to patients referred to, or attending, the service with contraceptive and sexual health needs. This includes all aspects of treatment and service management.
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the sexual health and contraceptive service, including undertaking relevant administrative responsibilities.
  • Attend clinical supervision and maintain up-to-date knowledge of current research, developments, and treatments in contraception and sexual health.
  • Provide medical support to the HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team.
  • Share responsibility with colleagues for providing 24/7 cover for the unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues during periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  • Provide clinical supervision to junior medical and/or dental practitioners, shared with consultant colleagues.
  • Participate in teaching, examinations, and accreditation activities as required, and contribute to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Undertake outpatient clinic commitments at peripheral sites, as agreed with the Care Group management team.
  • Contribute to the Care Group's research agenda, in line with the Trust's Research and Development (R&D) framework.
  • Take part in clinical audit programmes, morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical governance activities, and Learning from Deaths initiatives.
  • Actively contribute to the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Care Group's Business Plan. This may include participation in service planning discussions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Deliver all activities within the contracted service level and according to the operating plan for the service(s).
  • Provide professional leadership for staff working in the specialty. This includes fostering service improvement projects and ensuring ongoing post-qualification education and training.
  • Work with clinical and professional colleagues to maintain staff productivity and promote job satisfaction. This may include involvement in peer and/or junior staff appraisals.
  • Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group, Departmental Manager, or Clinical Director.
  • Adhere to all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, and environmental/food hygiene.
  • Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in a manner consistent with evidence-based practice and a commitment to patient safety.
Person specification Teaching
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision to junior doctors and nurses
Registration
  • Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council / General Dental Council
Qualifications
  • Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH)
  • Letter of Competence in Intrauterine Techniques
  • Letter of Competence in Subdermal Implant insertion and removal
Training and Experience
  • Relevant experience at SHO level or above
  • Experience of GUM and HIV medicine
  • Experience with provision of all forms of contraception and management of side effects of contraception.
