Specialist Pharmacist

This is a rotational post with the possibility to rotate through all the clinical teams within the Pharmacy Department. The post will be initially based within the surgical team providing a clinical pharmacy service to a variety of surgical specialities across the trust and you will be joining a team of experienced pharmacists and technicians to cover the various directorates.
The postholder will be given the responsibility for a variety of clinical areas under the supervision of the lead clinical pharmacist for the specialist area and they will get the opportunity to periodically rotate through these areas building experience and expertise in a wide variety of clinical settings.
You will be expected to attend consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings where appropriate, and to provide support and training to nursing staff, Pharmacy Technicians and junior Pharmacists as well as facilitating flow through the Freeman Hospital discharge lounge. You will also help support senior pharmacy staff in promoting the safe, effective and economic use of medicines via audit and guideline development.

Main duties of the jobThe Trust strives to be at the forefront of surgical and medical services, and as a tertiary care centre provides the opportunity for involvement in several specialist areas.
This post will support, and further augment, our Clinical Pharmacy Service to both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital sites on a rotational basis. Attendance at consultant-led ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings would also be required.
We require a motivated and enthusiastic Pharmacist, who are registered with the GPhC, with significant post-qualification experience, to become a member of our team. Candidate who possess an independent prescribing (IP) qualification will be encouraged to use this within an agreed sub-specialty, once training objectives are complete. Our team currently supports IP activity in many inpatient areas.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate extended hours services for one year post appointment and then subsequently in the weekend and Bank Holiday rota, which provides clinical pharmacist support on RVI/Freeman sites, 7 days a week.

Job responsibilitiesThere are many opportunities to participate in training and education and we have strong links with the local pharmacy and medical schools. All Pharmacists are expected to participate in in-house education sessions for pharmacy staff. There may also be opportunities to deliver training sessions to junior doctors and medical students.
- To develop and maintain clinical pharmacy services in a specialist area or directorate within the overall Trust clinical pharmacy strategy
- To participate in the provision of other pharmacy patient services functions
- To promote the safe, rational and cost effective use of medicines by working closely with nursing and medical staff and health care managers
- To perform the professional role of a Registered Pharmacist, including advice, supervision and co-operation with colleagues, particularly in relation to support/cover for absent colleagues

Person Specification KNOWLEDGE- Demonstrable evidence of competence in general clinical practice
- Demonstrable evidence of competence in speciality
- Demonstrate the ability to appropriately recommend, substantiate and communicate therapeutic options
- Ability to communicate in a verbal or written manner with patients, junior pharmacy, nursing, medical, and other multidisciplinary staff
- Ability to influence junior pharmacy, nursing, medical, and other multidisciplinary staff
- Demonstrated commitment to enhancing the quality of patient care
- Teaching skills
- Ability to utilise presentation, spreadsheet and database software packages to support the work of the clinical pharmacy team
- Significant post registration experience in hospital pharmacy
- Experience of working in a hospital environment
- Demonstrable post-graduate experience in pharmacy
- Experience of working with specialist patient cohort
- Experience of working within specialist area
- Evidence of involvement in clinical audit
- UK-registered pharmacist (GPhC)
- Completion of MPharm degree (or an undergraduate degree in Pharmacy with relevant experience) plus pre-registration training and experience
- Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy, or satisfactory evidence of equivalent competence as demonstrated in a practice portfolio of evidence
- Clinical Diploma / Clinical Masters
- Registered with the GPhc as an independent prescriber
