This is an exciting opportunity to join the Aseptic Services Pharmacy department at King's College Hospital. The post holder will strive to ensure the pharmaceutical quality systems are robust, procedures are controlled and the medicines we deliver to our patients are of high quality.

The post holder will be the Accountable Pharmacist for the Aseptic units at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust - Denmark Hill site, a large and progressive teaching hospital. They will be responsible for managing the aseptic production units and will have responsibility for the day-to-day manufacture of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and clinical trials doses within the Aseptic Services department.

Main duties of the job

To be accountable for all aspects of the service including approval of all systems of work and documentation. To ensure the smooth and safe running of the production units, minimising risk to patients and staff and providing high quality doses.

The post holder is responsible for delivery and development of Aseptic Services provided at Kings College Hospital NHS Trust. This includes cytotoxic chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition (PN), centralised intravenous additives (CIVAS) and aseptic manufacturing services on all Trust sites.

The post holder will provide professional leadership and advice on all matters of Aseptic Services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive Aseptic Service to the Trust, ensuring compliance with current directives, legislation, external audits, GMP, GCP and Health and Safety. This service includes the provision of chemotherapy, TPN, CIVAS and aseptically manufactured products.

To be an accountable pharmacist, responsible for all aspects of the service within the aseptic preparation unit. Including approval of all systems of work and documentation used in the unit.

To lead Aseptic Preparation Audits as an accountable pharmacist and be familiar with systems of work including using iQAAPS.

Support the development of the PQS and PQS processes, including ownership of quality management processes.

To support the Associate Chief Pharmacist and Chief Technician in Aseptic Services in the establishment and maintenance of safe working systems/procedures in line with GCP and GMP.

To be responsible for effective pharmaceutical input to the trust's nutrition team.

To ensure all patients requiring nutrition have a patient specific regime that is tailored to their nutritional and metabolic status and that the patient is monitored to ensure safe administration of the nutrition solution.

To critically evaluate the aseptic quality systems with a view to ensuring that best practice is in operation within Aseptic Services.

To be responsible for the reviewing documentation within Aseptic Services ensuring compliance with current directives relating to good practice and Health and Safety.

To lead and implement service development projects to grow the service and always aim higher for a better quality of care.

To work effectively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary and pharmacy environment, and maintain rapport with medical and other colleagues.

Ensuring safe and efficient working, and supporting staff to ensure they are fit for work and workload is distributed equally.

Person specification Education and Qualifications
  • Competency assessed and examined professional registration GPhC/PSNI
  • Specialist post-graduate certificate in Clinical Pharmacy
  • Specialist Masters in Technical services
Knowledge and Experience
  • Knowledge of GCP, GMP, QA, regulations and legislation relevant to aseptic services
  • Experience in developing and management of a Pharmaceutical Quality System (PQS)
  • Demonstrable knowledge relating to Adult, Paediatric and neonatal Parenteral Nutrition
  • Knowledge of regulations and legislation relevant to Clinical Trials
Skills and Competencies
  • Extensive post registration experience relevant to hospital pharmacy with assessed competencies
  • Significant experience working in an Aseptic unit, including day to day management and supervision
