Overview of the Specialist Employment Lawyer position

Sellick Partnership is currently recruiting for a Specialist Employment Lawyer to join a reputable London Borough Council. Our client is looking for an experienced Employment Lawyer who has extensive experience dealing with employment tribunal cases and advisory work ideally from local authority but candidates with transferrable skills from other sectors are encouraged to apply. This opportunity is on a hybrid working basis, and our client is happy to consider part-time (minimum 3 days) or full-time applicants. This role is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and ambitious employment lawyer, who is looking to progress in to senior leadership.

Key responsibilities of the Specialist Employment Lawyer
  • As the Specialist Employment Lawyer, you will be the sole employment lawyer on the team reporting directly in to the Head of Law
  • Managing a varied employment caseload including disciplinary and grievance matters, capability and ill-health processes, sickness absence and medical capability issues, restructures, reorganisations and redundancy processes, dismissals and other termination issues, contractual disputes and employment status issues, exits and settlement arrangements, equalities, discrimination, whistleblowing and victimisation issues, TUPE
  • Attending employment tribunals and providing advice to the clients in the local authority
  • Providing expert advice to senior officers, Human Resources and schools on complex, sensitive and strategically important employment matters Introduce new procedures, as required, arising from new legislation, and improvements in efficiency
  • Providing policy advice and training to HR teams and other council departments
Experience/qualifications required for the Specialist Employment Lawyer
  • In the role of Specialist Employment Lawyer, you must be a qualified Lawyer (Solicitor or Barrister) with at least 7 years PQE and a current practicing certificate
  • Able to work on a hybrid basis with two days per week required in the office for full-time candidates - candidates seeking to work part-time hours are encouraged to apply too
  • You must have experience in employment law, any sector will be considered but previous local authority experience is advantageous
  • Strong experience with employment tribunals
