Job Description
Specialist Dietitian - Renal

The closing date is 08 April 2026.

An opportunity has arisen to join our friendly, forward thinking and collaborative team at South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Our Dietetic Department of more than 50 staff is managed as one team, but is structured into smaller teams led by Senior Specialist Dietitians. We are actively involved in the training of Trainee Dietitians and offer A, B and C placements for both Leeds Beckett and Newcastle University.

We are looking to recruit a self motivated and committed dietitian to join our renal dietetic team of 2 specialist dietitians. The post holder will work with both inpatients and outpatients for general nephrology, pre dialysis/low clearance, acute kidney injury, end stage renal disease patients receiving renal replacement therapy - haemodialysis / peritoneal dialysis and renal transplantation. Outpatient haemodialysis is provided at the main renal unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital and two dialysis satellite units in Washington & Durham. Applicants should have a keen interest in the nutritional management of renal patients (training can be provided) and be able to work flexibly especially when covering evening / twilight dialysis patient shifts.

Our department recognises the importance of work life balance, and we actively support flexible working within our department.

Transport links to Newcastle city centre via Metro. Prospective applicants are welcome to contact the department for any further information.

Main duties of the job

This role sits within the Dietetic renal team. The team works on a rotational basis every 3 months with rotations being the renal ward, Sunderland dialysis unit, and satellite units in Washington & Durham. There is cross cover within rotations. The renal MDT works closely and are supportive of dietitians.

There will be opportunities in the field of research as we look to adopt and support the AHP regional strategy. You will be supported to undertake any applicable leadership courses.

The department is friendly and supportive and encourages CPD, including regular clinical supervision and evidence based practice groups.

There will be opportunities to undertake non medical prescribing as this has been shown to be useful within renal medicine.

This post is subject to satisfactory DBS check at Enhanced level.
