Location: Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9
Reports to: Director of Nursing
Salary: Appointment will be made on Nurse Tutor Scale (€73,062- € 81,989) at a point in line with Government pay policy.
Hours of work: 37.5 Hours per Week

Position Summary:

To assist the Director of Nursing plan, develop and deliver education for nurses and healthcare support staff in order to contribute to the continued development of an effective, person centred and equitable Health Service. The role involves the planning, budgeting, co-ordinating, implementing and evaluating of a range of educational courses and events. Education should be based on relevant and up to date research and provide a collaborative learning environment to encourage reflection and innovation.

Responsibilities Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The role of the Specialist Coordinator is to assist the Director of Nursing to develop and manage a centre of education that will provide accessible, high quality training, education and development services to all nurses and HCA's employed in Beaumont Hospital incorporating St Joseph's Campus, Raheny.

Leadership/Management
  • Assist in the implementation of an education, training and development strategy for the professional development of nurses/midwives and support staff.
  • Participate in the identification of the education, training and development needs of all nurses/midwives and support staff within the Centre's remit.
  • Plan and arrange delivery of a comprehensive training and development programme in accordance with annually agreed objectives as assigned by Nursing Practice Development Coordinator (Interim arrangement).
  • Contribute to policy and practice development as appropriate.
  • Promote cross-divisional and interagency education practices.
  • Promote the professional development of staff as integral to the management of the nursing resource.
  • Promote and develop collaboration and partnership with the other Centres of Nursing and Midwifery Education.
  • Support the delivery of the Nurse Service Plan through aligned education programmes.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with nurse managers, programme facilitators, practice development staff, members of the multidisciplinary team, and other key internal stakeholders, in the organisation, planning, co-ordination and provision of programmes of education and training to meet identified service need.
Operational
  • Assist the Director of Nursing to plan and arrange delivery of a range of education programmes which preserve the integrity of each individual division of the register.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing to plan and deliver education programmes to support staff as required.
  • Prepare a service plan, annual report and any other reports as requested.
  • Provide and deliver education and training programmes as appropriate.
  • Source and evaluate internal and external education and training providers.
  • Establish and/or maintain systems to record education, training and development activities of staff.
  • Undertake regular evaluation of training and development activities.
  • Encourage and support the research agenda at local and national level.
  • Ensure that education, training and development activities are grounded in sound evidence.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of education, training and development programmes on service delivery and professional development.
Advisory
  • Advise the Director of Nursing and other relevant stakeholders on matters related to education, training and development.
  • Participate at regional and national level on appropriate issues relating to nursing education, training and development.
Teaching & Learning
  • Plan, design, co-ordinate and deliver a range of education programmes for general nurses.
  • Be involved in development and delivery of QQI accredited programmes with Consortium of Centres of Nursing and Midwifery Education (CCNME).
  • Lead on curriculum development and preparation of programmes for Category 1 approval in line with relevant policy of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and CCNME.
  • Manage programme bookings, timetabling, programme cancellations etc. in line with departmental policy and procedure.
  • Participate in the development, accreditation, co-ordination and delivery of programmes leading to academic award and ensure such programmes comply fully with relevant requirements and standards of professional regulatory and academic awarding bodies.
  • Plan and manage the assessment process for relevant programmes including invigilation, internal examining, collation of results, submission of approved results to the awarding body, communicating results to learners.
  • Engage in regular review of programme content and material, and teaching and learning methodologies, to ensure they are up to date and based on the best available evidence and research.
  • Engage in continuous quality improvement of programmes through programme evaluation and review, development and implementation of programme improvement plans, and monitoring of corrective action taken to address identified deficits.
  • Engage in peer review and audit of programmes of education and training, and related services, in line with approved quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of education programmes on service delivery and their impact on professional nursing and midwifery practice.
  • Identify equipment and other teaching and learning resources required to support the provision of programmes of education and training, and manage the ordering and purchasing process in line with HSE National Financial Regulations.
  • Participate in the design of on-line programmes of education for BORIS that are responsive to the identified needs of registered nurses.
Leadership & Management

Professional
  • Keep informed of emerging developments in the nursing profession, nurse education and the health services in general.
  • Ensure all programmes of education and training have a quality, patient safety and person-centred focus.
  • Maintain, own knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, regulatory standards, legislation, professional regulatory body programme requirements and standards, and quality assurance standards of awarding bodies, to perform the role effectively.
  • Maintain confidentiality relating to learner records, with particular reference to personal details and assessment results, and ensure compliance with data protection legislation.
  • Formally declare to the Head of Nurse Education and Practice Development, in a timely manner, any conflict of interest relating to the assessment and marking of individual learners so that alternative arrangements can be put in place.
  • Foster an ethos of research and evidence-based practice across all programmes of education and training.
  • Adopt a quality enhancement approach to the provision of education and training programmes, and related services.
  • Take responsibility for own professional development, reflection on practice and continuous performance improvement.

Qualifications Selection Criteria:

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory:
  • Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses, with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
  • Be registered as a Registered Nurse Tutor with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
  • Have a minimum of three years satisfactory post registration clinical experience at the closing date for receipt of applications for the post.
  • Possess the requisite knowledge, and leadership and management ability, for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
Appointment to and continuation in posts that require statutory registration is dependent upon the post holder maintaining annual registration in the relevant division of the register maintained by an Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland).
