Software Engineering Apprenticeship (viewed11 times)

MI5 (and MI6) offer a Software Engineering Apprenticeship in London or Greater Manchester. The apprenticeship combines academic modules with fixed leave periods and a mix of in-person and remote learning. The starting salary is £27,213 to £29,150 depending on location.

Role and responsibilities

You'll begin with an induction and a six-month period focused on your degree and an innovation project to develop knowledge and skills. From there, you'll take on real software engineering tasks, collaborate with fellow apprentices, and gain experience across diverse, multi-disciplinary teams. Throughout the three-year programme, you'll continue to receive training, mentoring and support. You'll work with product owners, business analysts, and agile delivery colleagues, gaining broad exposure to different functions within the intelligence agencies and contributing to real products and complex systems in a mission-driven environment. You'll help create innovative digital solutions that underpin critical operations.

Program structure and schedule

During a standard week, you'll be expected to work 36 hours, with 20% of your time dedicated to study, which can be done from home. Occasionally, travel to training sites in London or Central Manchester may be required.

Requirements
  • Qualifications: 72 UCAS points by September 2026; GCSEs (or equivalent Functional Skills Level 2) grade 4/C or above in English language and Maths.
  • Eligibility: You must normally have been resident in the UK for seven of the last ten years and be a British Citizen. If you hold dual nationality, you'll be considered. You can apply at 17, but start date will be after your 18th birthday.
  • Subject restrictions: You must not have completed or undertaken a Level 4 qualification or higher in a software engineering subject prior to commencing this apprenticeship.
Salary and benefits

Starting salary: £27,213 to £29,150 depending on location. Benefits include 25 days' annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years' service), an interest-free season ticket loan, and access to on-site facilities such as a gym, restaurant, and coffee bars at some sites.

Diversity, inclusion and culture

MI5 and MI6 are committed to an inclusive and supportive working environment. The organisations value wellbeing, talent, and equitable opportunities, with affinity networks covering gender, ethnic minority groups, disability, neurodiversity, LGBTQ+, and more. Diversity and inclusion are critical to the mission, and applications from under-represented groups are welcomed.

How to apply and eligibility

To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen. If you hold dual nationality, you'll still be considered. Full eligibility details are available on the MI5 and SIS websites.
