Job Description
Senior Vascular Scientist

Responsibilities
  • Perform a full range of vascular diagnostic investigations, selecting the appropriate method for each patient.
  • Report findings and discuss results with referring clinicians.
  • Engage in agreed non scanning duties with the Chief Vascular Scientist.
  • Plan and prioritise daily workload, ensuring efficient use of time and resources.
  • Provide training to new staff, including departmental trainees, radiologists, vascular surgeons, AAA screening technicians and clinical staff.
  • Travel within the Thames Valley Vascular Network to provide scanning support to outreach clinics.
  • Adapt to service development needs, including flexible working hours.
Clinical Duties
  • Perform accurate assessments to diagnose and monitor peripheral arterial and venous disease, predominantly using colour duplex ultrasound.
  • Take patient history and ensure appropriate examinations are carried out.
  • Produce clear, concise reports promptly after investigations.
  • Report findings directly to the referring consultant within an appropriate timeframe.
  • Advise clinicians on scan results and provide evidence based second opinions.
  • Prioritise incoming referrals, plan investigations and discuss workload issues with the Chief Vascular Scientist.
  • Inform patients of scan results and implications with sensitivity and empathy.
  • Reinforce health education messages to patients and relatives about risk factor management.
  • Represent the VSU at clinical review meetings, including weekly MDT meetings.
  • Provide health education for patients with vascular disorders.
  • Adhere to local and departmental infection control policy and procedures.
Management and Leadership
  • Accept delegated responsibility for agreed aspects of the VSU's day to day running.
  • Deputise for the Chief Vascular Scientist when necessary.
  • Continually assess, prioritise and plan incoming referrals and investigations.
  • Assist in the development of service initiatives aligned with national and local objectives.
  • Help devise, evaluate and update scanning protocols set by the Chief Vascular Scientist.
  • Ensure compliance with Trust policies, procedures and standards within the division.
  • Consult with the Chief Vascular Scientist on any complaints.
  • Set a positive, professional example for junior team members and trainees.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels as part of team responsibilities.
  • Stay informed of emergency procedures and health and safety requirements.
Teaching
  • Supervise trainees (clinical vascular scientists), training them in practical imaging skills and use of complex equipment.
  • Ensure accuracy of trainee generated reports, ensuring adherence to the unit protocol.
  • Train radiologists, vascular surgeons and STP trainees.
  • Demonstrate or teach other staff (nurses, physiotherapists, medical students, etc.) as required.
  • Participate in local training events.
Research and Practice Development
  • Assist in the production and development of research funding applications and protocols.
  • Perform patient investigations as part of research projects.
  • Present research results at scientific meetings.
  • Present research information to develop knowledge within the VSU.
  • Undertake vascular lab related audits.
  • Help develop clinical practices for improved service delivery.
Personal/Professional Development
  • Maintain personal professional growth, identify training needs and keep a portfolio of continuing professional development.
  • Maintain CSVS accreditation.
  • Review peer literature to stay current with practices and technological advances.
  • Complete mandatory training as required by the Trust and adhere to all local and Trust policies.
  • Behave professionally and act as an ambassador for the Trust and division.
  • Agree personal development goals at annual appraisals and work to meet them.
  • Exercise professional accountability and raise awareness of development needs.
Qualifications
  • CSVS Accredited Vascular Scientist, or STP trainee at the end of training.
