Senior Trauma Fellow with an interest in Pelvic & Acetabulum

Anexciting opportunity has arisen for the right candidate to commence the SeniorTrauma Fellowship in the field of Pelvic and Acetabulum reconstruction at theLeeds General Infirmary working under Professor Peter Giannoudis. Applicationsare welcome from all suitably qualified trainees.

Thepost holder will join the Trauma team at LGI under the direct supervision ofProfessor Giannoudis as well as our established cohort of ConsultantOrthopaedic Trauma Surgeons. Our 10 Major Trauma and 14 Trauma consultants havea wealth of national and international experience. This post will help toprepare the successful candidate for their consultant post.

Thesuccessful applicant will receive advanced clinical and surgical training inall aspects of orthopaedic trauma surgery and particularly in the field ofpelvic and acetabulum reconstruction. Leeds Major Trauma Centre is based atLeeds General Infirmary; is one of the largest MTCs in volume of cases ittreats per year (over 2,000 TARN eligible cases over the last year), and topperforming centres in most key performance indicators.

Main duties of the job

Thepost holder will provide support to the Trauma team and ensure resilience andappropriate response to complex orthopaedic trauma and pelvic and acetabulumfractures. You will therefore contribute to the service in its pursuit toprovide the best levels of care for patients and become the best Trauma centrein the country.

Inaddition, they will be expected to take part in research studies as appropriateand help with the departmental audit and database. Undergraduate andpostgraduate teaching will also be required. The trauma fellow will also takeand organise tertiary referrals and take a role in the delivery of the Traumainjury clinic.

LEEDSMAJOR TRAUMA CENTRE (MTC) SERVICE

LeedsGeneral Infirmary opened as a level 1 trauma centre on 2nd April 2013. Due toits regional remit it provides responsibility of care to a population of almost3 million. The support encompasses all aspects of trauma care includedattendance at trauma calls, co-ordination and prioritisation of patient care,and emergency admissions as well as emergency operating. The service wasrecently rewarded as the second busiest in England and also produced thesecond-best quality outcomes within the country (as per TARN data).

TheCSU brings together the core services providing Trauma and Orthopaedics, MajorTrauma, Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedics, Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgeryand Paediatric Plastic Surgery.

Job responsibilities

Throughthe West Yorkshire Major Trauma Network, the MTC serves patients across theregion from incident to rehabilitation. Each morning the team has amulti-disciplinary team meeting to discuss all major trauma patients within thehospital. Throughout the day the MTC receives acute admissions from around theregion. Our Major Trauma Nurse specialists co-ordinate the care of ourpatients as soon as they come through the door into the emergency department.

Theythen follow the patient pathway through the different levels of care that arerequired supporting both the patient and their relatives up until and beyonddischarge. The Network was established in 2013 to bring together Major TraumaCare across West Yorkshire and is a collaboration between ourselves and fiveTrauma Units in other hospitals in the region.This ensures all patients that require major trauma services have accessto the right level of care at the right time, in the right environment.

Wehave invested a further £8m over the years to enhance facilities, including thecreation of a dedicated MTC ward and theatre, and enhanced staffing.

Aswell as being the second largest MTC in the country we have consistentlyremained in the top three for outcomes. Over the last three years, Leeds MTChas been leading the way nationally in the management of major limb traumarequiring combined plastic and orthopaedic surgery which is a huge achievement.

Thedepartment is supported by Trauma co-ordinators, Major Trauma Case Managers,and clinical nurse specialists and a large rehabilitation team led byrehabilitation Fellows.

LeedsGeneral Infirmary has 3 orthogeriatric wards, one major trauma-polytrauma ward,one trauma ward, one paediatric ward including 2 paediatric HDU beds, and aneight bedded HOBs ward shared with plastic surgery. There are 2 trauma theatresrunning all day lists and one major trauma-polytrauma theatre. All trauma outpatients are seen in adedicated fracture clinic with supporting radiology facilities and the A&EDepartment are on the ground floor of the same building.

Allorthopaedic trauma patients are admitted to the Leeds General Infirmary. Particular specialist services provided arepelvic and acetabular reconstruction, spinal injuries, open fractures, postinjury limb reconstruction and complex fracture work. There is a specificinterest in polytrauma and many peripheral trauma units refer most of theirmultiple injured patients straight to Leeds General Infirmary on day one.

Thispost is designed to support this well-established trauma service. The referral base is continuing to developand grow and forms the basis of the new Trauma Centre at Leeds GeneralInfirmary.

JuniorMedical Staff

WithinMajor Trauma and General Trauma and Orthopaedics there are 20 SpR Drs fromST3-ST8 providing support on a registrar rota.Fifteen are supported through the Yorkshire deanery and a further fiveare Trust Grade Registrar posts. The CT rota of ten is comprised of threedeanery trainees and seven Trust Grade Drs within the service establishment

DUTIESOF THE POST AND LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Toparticipate in all weekly activities of the department, including; the morningtrauma meeting, ward rounds, outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and researchmeetings. In addition, such activities are expected to be covered as:

Ward management

Dressings clinics

Post-operative intensive care

Discussions with relatives

Initiation/change of treatment

TEACHINGAND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

Teaching

Regularundergraduate and post graduate teaching.Weekly teaching of the foundation year doctors, the ST1-2 (CST)s, theST3+ trainees, the multidisciplinary Major Trauma team and allied healthprofessionals.

Research

Facilitiesare available for clinical research and laboratory facilities can be arrangedfor special purposes. It is anticipatedthat the post holder will participate in a number of clinical research projectsduring this appointment. Research time may be incorporated into the job planfor these posts, subject to discussion and the individual personal developmentneeds of the applicant.

Person Specification Experience
  • Five years experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards
  • Significant experience in managing complex extremity orthopaedic trauma polytrauma patients and patients with pelvic and acetabular fractures
  • Ability to provide complete details of employment history
  • Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research. Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
