Job Description
Overview

As a Senior Technician: Infrastructure in the Nanoscience Building, you will report to the Technical Specialist and ensure adherence to organisational policies, procedures and health and safety regulations. You will support business development and advanced technical problem solving while maintaining specialist equipment and the building infrastructure.

Main duties and responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive technical service to all Nanoscience users, including design, development, installation, commissioning, maintenance, service and repair of experimental components, assemblies and rigs.
  • Use, monitor, repair, maintain and demonstrate a range of general and highly specialised technical equipment across the School's laboratories to a high standard.
  • Plan, design, develop, construct experimental systems, apparatus or equipment to meet teaching, research and related purposes.
  • Provide detailed drawings, simulations and documentation of equipment to aid teaching and research.
  • Ensure all building infrastructure (chillers, gas scrubbers, UPS, hydrogen purifiers and external gas supplies) remains operational through repairs, preventive maintenance and liaison with external contractors.
  • Deliver excellent service for research projects, commercial partners and other stakeholders, keeping equipment downtime minimal and communicating repair timescales.
  • Monitor stocks of acids, solvents and consumables, ordering and receiving via the University SAP System.
  • Liaise with suppliers, engineers, contractors and internal service providers to arrange complex repairs and infrastructure maintenance approximately one day per week, ensuring clear communication of status to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the School's Self Contained Breathing Apparatus team, First Aider role and mental health first aid.
  • Provide high quality administrative support, such as ordering consumables and maintaining up to date laboratory user access logs.
  • Train technical colleagues, staff and students in operation and maintenance of equipment, safe use of acids, solvents, cryogenic safety and liquid nitrogen dispensing.
  • Ensure compliance with all legislation, University and School policies and procedures.
  • Act as the School's LEV competent person, offering expert advice to the Health and Safety committee and serving as initial point of contact for staff and students.
  • Undertake continued professional development.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Person Specification
  • Experience equivalent to Level 6 (Degree) qualification in a relevant field with proven vocational skills (Essential).
  • Experience working in a semiconductor cleanroom environment (Essential).
  • Ability to plan and work safely, complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, environmental compliance procedures and systems, particularly hazards related to robotic systems (IOSH Managing Safety) (Essential).
  • Ability to deliver technical training to others in materials, equipment, tools and processes supporting the Group's teaching and research portfolio (Essential).
  • Demonstrable aptitude and experience of maintenance and troubleshooting within a scientific, manufacturing and/or engineering facility (mechanical, electrical, gas, chemicals) (Essential).
  • Practical experience of electronics and general lab equipment maintenance and repair; knowledge of building systems (ventilation, gases, pressure systems) and their complexity (Essential).
  • Ability to organise and plan projects and tasks within agreed constraints and quality standards to ensure service uptime (Essential).
  • Efficiency at all times, maintaining workplace organisation and minimising waste (Essential).
  • Ability to lead by example with a strong focus on developing and managing junior staff (Essential).
  • Write clear, succinct technical reports and communicate to a range of stakeholders verbally and in writing (Desirable).
  • Technical Professional registration to IEng Level (Desirable).

Salary: £32,080-£36,636, with potential to progress to £39,906 through sustained exceptional contribution.
