Senior Resident Engineer

Project & Team Arrangements

The role invites the Senior Resident Engineer (SRE) to lead the onsite resident engineering team for the Inis Oírr Pier Improvements Design & Build Project, a high profile marine infrastructure project in an environmentally sensitive island setting. The SRE will be appointed from project commencement until the end of November 2027, full time, with part time involvement possible during the 12 month defects period. Full time residential accommodation and office facilities are provided on the island for the resident engineering team, with day travel to mainland production sites on a rota basis as required.

About The Role

Reporting to the Employer's Representative, the Senior Resident Engineer has overall responsibility for site supervision and contract administration. The key duties of the role include, but are not limited to:

• Assist the Employer's Representative in liaising with the Engineering Representative, contractor, client and all major stakeholders
• Lead the resident engineering team, which includes Resident Engineer and Clerk of Works, in carrying out its duties
• Organise adequate supervision at all times during construction works on the site
• Review and assess contractor claims and write reports on claims
• Review and report on contractor payment applications against work completed
• Monitor progress on site relative to the construction programme
• Ensure compliance with the conditions set out in the relevant licenses for the works
• Assess all relevant contractor submissions including method statements for compliance with works requirements and liaise with the Employer's Representative
• Supervise the works, keep records, measure, manage correspondence and contractual documentation
• Ensure works are carried out in accordance with contract specification and design drawings
• Check that all traffic management plans and phasing of construction works conform to the client's agreement and Chapter 8 of the current Traffic Signs Manual, ensuring vehicular and pedestrian movements are safely accommodated

A typical working week is 45 hours with some flexibility required in line with the nature of the works.

Key Skills / Attributes

• Degree in engineering or construction management (minimum Level 8 in the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent); • Experience as a senior resident engineer (or equivalent) on civil engineering works, including supervision of at least one marine based project with a construction value of more than €2 million (exclusive of VAT); • Experience administering public works contracts; • Experience of civil engineering projects in environmentally sensitive areas; • Experience developing or monitoring Environmental Operating Plan(s) for civil engineering projects; • Experience implementing procedures and systems for accurate record keeping; • Current certificate in the CIF IOSH Safety for Construction Manager Programme, or equivalent; • Good organisational and staff management skills; • Motivated individual with a strong work ethic; • Excellent written and oral communication skills; • Fluency or high level of proficiency in spoken and written English; • Attainment of Chartered Engineer status (CEng, MIEI or equivalent); • Proficiency in spoken Gaeilge to a level enabling communication with island residents on non technical matters; • Completed Safe Pass course and possession of a Safe Pass registration card prior to appointment; • Experience dealing with navigational control procedures and the Commissioner of Irish Lights and/or harbour/port authorities.
