Job Purpose

To provide technical authority and governance for the operation & maintenance (O&M) strategies of UU's electrical field assets. The goal of the Reliability Engineer is to increase the overall uptime and availability of equipment and systems, by reducing downtime and number of functional failures.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Lead the determination of equipment criticality across all electrical asset classes and business functions, acting as the technical authority for whole-life asset care strategies.
  • Apply Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to develop predictive and preventative maintenance strategies for critical assets, and to propose efficient spare parts holding strategies.
  • Use field feedback and performance data to conduct regular Preventative Maintenance Optimisation (PMO), ensuring maintenance activities remain effective and efficient.
  • Perform detailed reliability, asset health, and performance analysis-prioritising high-risk and high-cost assets-to initiate strategy reviews and quantify improvements such as Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), cost savings, and resource efficiency.
  • Facilitate defect elimination studies and solutions, by collating and analysing submitted root cause analysis (RCA) conclusions, carried out locally by Maintenance Specialists, and using the companies 'bad actor' report to identify repeat cause assets which require investigation.
  • Provide technical support and content for job plans, work instructions, and internal training courses; collaborate with operational and maintenance teams to improve reliability of operational equipment, and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, including Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR).
  • Support and influence the commercial, engineering and capital delivery (CEC) area of the business, ensuring new or modified installations are standardised where possible, and designed for reliability, maintainability, and minimum whole life cost (WLC).

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of maintenance, asset management and reliability principles, with practical experience in maintaining electrical assets and applying best practices within maintenance teams.
  • Hold Incorporated Engineer status or show a commitment to achieving chartered status through a recognised professional body.
  • Knowledgeable and conversant with UK electricity regulations and quality standards.
  • Show a critical commitment to Health, Safety and Wellbeing, with a solid appreciation of Process Safety and its role in operational excellence.
  • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to tailor technical information to a wide range of stakeholders, influence decision-makers, and support strategic change across operational teams.
  • Be IT literate and confident in analysing data from various sources to assess asset performance, prioritise improvements, and support business objectives-balancing whole-life cost with risk, whilst maintaining regulatory and statutory compliance.

We rely on every employee to ensure our customers receive the best possible service, day in, day out. In return, we ensure that you will be well rewarded for your efforts, from an excellent salary through to development opportunities that will really kick start a thriving career here at UU.
