Job summary

Senior Principal Physicist, Site Lead, Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection Physicist, Band 8B Barts Health's Radiation Safety Team provides diagnostic radiology physics services and radiation safety support to all users of ionising radiation in the Trust. There are ample opportunities for exciting projects working in collaboration with clinical colleagues on a wide range of modern imaging equipment (including photon-counting CTs). We also provide services to other external clients.

We are a friendly and supportive team, encouraging staff to use their talents and develop to their full potential. We are looking for a motivated physicist to act as the Radiation Safety Site lead at Newham University Hospital, and to also lead the patient dosimetry programme. You must have Clinical Scientist HCPC registration and MPE certification. An RPA certificate of competence or the ability to submit an application within 6-12 months is also required. Applicants with less experience can be considered for appointment at band 8A initially (as a development post) and will be moved to band 8b once the individual meets the required competencies.

The Radiation Safety Section is based at the Royal London Hospital. You will be expected to spend time at your lead site and to work on all Trust and client sites.

Main duties of the job

The aim of this post is to provide closer MPE / RPA working with the clinical departments and being more integrated into the clinical teams. You will also work with the site leadership teams on the site radiation protection programme.

Person Specification Experience
  • oExperience to act as an RPA
  • oExperience to act as a Medical Physics Expert in Diagnostic Radiology
  • oExperience in patient dosimetry and use of patient dose managements systems
  • oExperience of managing and supervising staff
Skills
  • oAble to understand and operate a wide range of diagnostic imaging equipment
  • oAble to analyse complex data
  • oAble to interpret and apply relevant guidance and legislation
Knowledge
  • oSpecialist knowledge (MPE level) in radiation and imaging physics as applied in medicine
  • oSpecialist knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare and biomedical research
  • oKnowledge of patient dosimetry techniques and software
Qualifications
  • oBSc (Hons) Physics or equivalent.
  • oMSc in Radiation Physics or equivalent experience.
  • oRegistered Clinical Scientist
  • oCertificated MPE
  • oRPA certificate of competence or ability to submit within 6 months of taking up post
