Senior Mediation Officer

An experienced Senior SEND Mediations Officer is required to join a Local Authority SEND service, with a particular focus on mediation, dispute resolution and SEND Tribunal work.
This role is suited to an experienced professional who can confidently manage complex mediation cases, tribunal proceedings and high-profile disputes, taking ownership of an active caseload from day one.
Working closely with families, schools, health partners and legal colleagues, you will play a key role in securing timely, lawful and child-centred outcomes while helping to resolve disputes wherever possible and reducing the need for Tribunal hearings.
Key Responsibilities- Lead on complex SEND mediation cases, providing expert oversight throughout the mediation process.
- Manage a caseload of high-risk and sensitive cases, ensuring timely and effective resolutions.
- Work collaboratively with families, schools, health partners, legal colleagues and other professionals to resolve disputes.
- Represent the Local Authority confidently during mediation meetings and SEND Tribunal proceedings where required.
- Provide specialist advice and guidance to colleagues on complex SEND legislation and dispute resolution.
- Identify and manage risks, ensuring statutory requirements and timescales are met.
- Support continuous improvement across mediation practice, promoting consistency and best practice.
- Build positive relationships with families and stakeholders to achieve the best possible outcomes for children and young people.
- Extensive knowledge of SEND legislation, including the Children and Families Act 2014, the SEND Code of Practice and the Equality Act 2010.
- Proven experience managing complex SEND casework within a Local Authority or similar environment.
- Demonstrable experience in mediation, dispute resolution, advocacy or representing cases at SEND Tribunal.
- Excellent negotiation, influencing and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience developing positive working relationships with families, schools, health partners and multi-agency teams.
- Good understanding of the wider legislative and organisational context affecting SEND services.
- Previous line management or supervisory experience is desirable.
