Senior Locally Employed Doctor in Neuro-ophthalmology and Strabismus

Applications are invited for two twelve month fellowship posts in Neuro ophthalmology and Strabismus at one of the largest provincial ophthalmic units in the UK. One post commences the first week of August 2026 and the other in February 2027.

The fellowship is based at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. The Neuro ophthalmology firm has 3 consultant ophthalmologists - Mr Vishwanath, Mr Yagan and Miss Littlewood - and a consultant neurologist - Dr Zermansky. The unit is supported by a large orthoptic department headed by Mrs Veronica Greenwood, and an electrophysiology department headed by Professor Neil Parry.
Main duties of the jobThe Fellow will participate in outpatient clinics, undertaking diagnosis, management and follow up of patients under the care of the Consultants. He or she will undertake surgery both under supervision and, where appropriate, independently. The Fellow attends outpatient clinic sessions and dedicated operating sessions under the direction of Consultant trainers.

Job responsibilitiesKey responsibilities include:
- Managing outpatient clinic consultations.
- Diagnosing and treating neuro ophthalmology and strabismus conditions.
- Performing surgical procedures under supervision and independently as required.
- Partaking in audits, teaching, and research activities.
- Medical Degree.
- Completed postgraduate training and qualification in ophthalmology and experience required for supervising other trainees in an emergency department, along with a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee.
- Ability to see eye casualty patients independently and willingness to participate in general on call duties if needed.
- Full registration and licence to practice with the General Medical Council.
- Experience of audit, teaching, and contribution to service improvement.
- Research and publications relevant to neuro ophthalmology and strabismus.
- Organisational skills and ability to work within multidisciplinary teams.
