Job Description

Contract Type: Permanent part time
Hours: 0.6 FTE ( 24 hours per week)
Salary: £46,047 pro rata
Location: Birmingham

Role Purpose

You will teach music, visual arts or related disciplines to students studying within the Academy of Contemporary Music. As a senior lecturer your duties will also include leadership in areas including the development of the curriculum and learning materials related to your specialism, supporting new teaching staff and contributing to quality assurance and enhancement processes.

Main Responsibilities

Curriculum Development and Delivery

  • Lead on the review and development of the curriculum and teaching and learning materials in areas that relate to your field of expertise
  • Support the programme/pathway leader to ensure industry relevance and embed industry opportunities within the design of the learning, teaching and assessment of your modules
  • Provide opportunities for all students on your modules to develop skills that enable their academic, personal and professional progression
  • Ensure that all learning materials for your modules are relevant, current, complete and informed by scholarship and research
  • Deliver a high quality teaching experience to students, aligning with areas of best practice in relation to the delivery of a creative industry higher education course
  • Ensure that your classes are delivered appropriately to support a positive and accessible experience for a diverse body of students
  • Contribute to the review and development of assessment briefs for modules that you lead
  • Undertake assessment, marking and moderation activities
  • Take registers and track attendance and engagement for your classes, letting module leaders know if you are concerned about any particular students
  • Gather and respond to feedback from the students that you teach
  • Provide support for the students on your modules, signposting them to other departments and individuals as appropriate

Quality Assurance and Enhancement

  • Ensure a standardised approach to the delivery of the curriculum by attending relevant meetings (including module huddles) and engaging with the teaching staff and leaders for your pathway and programme
  • Initiate and work on projects to enhance the academic experience of ACM students
  • Support the pathway/programme leader in the annual monitoring of the pathway/programme, contributing to discussions related to the course curriculum, delivery and overall student experience
  • Support the pathway/programme leader to implement strategies related to attainment and retention
  • Uphold academic and professional standards in all areas of your practice
  • Actively engage with ACM's policies and processes regarding learning, teaching and assessment
  • Review and respond to External Examiner feedback about the modules that you lead
  • Ensure that the modules that you teach on, and lead, adhere to appropriate academic standards

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Undertake module leadership for modules related to your area of expertise
  • Support and lead early career staff as appropriate
  • Attend termly programme/pathway meetings to discuss the delivery of the programme/pathway, identifying areas of good practice and/or risk
  • Attend and participate as a member of ACM committees, working groups and meetings as required
  • Support your programme / Pathway Leader with the strategic development of your programme / pathway
  • Support and lead on student recruitment activities, including Open Days
  • Take a senior role in the support of students on your programme/pathway, in alignment with the safeguarding and wellbeing mechanisms at ACM
  • Build the reputation of the Academy through scholarly and industry related practice, as appropriate
  • Lead and manage programme/pathway wide projects involving multiple stakeholders
  • There may also be opportunities to undertake remission in key areas such as subject specialism, assessment, education development, and quality assurance. These will be guided by the education leadership team

Management (applicable if line managing)

  • Directly manage a team of employees, including setting objectives, monitoring performance, and providing regular feedback and development opportunities
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, allocate work, and ensure tasks are completed to required standards and deadlines
  • Conduct performance appraisals and reviews and support the professional development of team members
  • Address, manage and resolve any employee issues, grievances, or conflicts within the team ensuring HR is aware of any issues.
  • Manage any health and wellbeing matters for team members, escalating where required to HR or to Health and Safety for support
  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies and procedures, and report on team performance and productivity to senior management
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new team members.
  • Work with the HR to support staff investigations, in the capacity of investigation or disciplinary manager
Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in education or a related creative industries subject or substantial equivalent industry experience
  • A teaching qualification in Higher Education or Fellowship with AdvanceHE, or a commitment to undertake qualification whilst in post

Essential Experience

  • Experience of teaching and supporting undergraduate students
  • Experience of curriculum design and developmentExperience of assessment, marking and moderation

Essential Skills / Knowledge

  • Awareness of the current issues impacting Higher Education and the role that teaching plays
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent IT skills and knowledge

Desirable

  • An internationally recognised output as either an academic or industry practitioner.
  • Experience of teaching and supporting postgraduate students
  • Experience supporting learning on an interdisciplinary programme
  • Experience working for an alternative Higher Education Institution
  • Senior Fellowship with AdvanceHE

This job purpose reflects the core activities of the post. As the Department and the post-holder develop, there will inevitably be some changes to the duties for which the post is responsible, and possibly to the emphasis of the post itself.
