Senior Grid Engineer

Opdenergy is a growing independent renewable energy producer (IPP) with presence in Europe, United States and Latin America with more than 19 years of experience. The company develops, builds, finances, manages, and operates high quality renewable energy projects in several countries, with a portfolio of 2,6 GW (1,3 operational and + 1,3 ready to build / under construction) assets in operations and construction, whole portfolio under development sums up to over 18 GW.
We are currently looking for a Senior Grid Engineer based in Madrid who, in coordination with the Business Development and Construction teams, will lead the interconnection of renewable energy projects, considering the technical requirements of the Utilities and Applicable Law.
What will you help with?
Review and validate electrical drawings (SLDs, layout, cable routing, earthing, etc.) submitted by EPCs, consultants, or equipment vendors.
Support the Grid Connection Managers in the preparation and review of grid connection studies and technical submissions to TSOs/DSOs.
Evaluate and verify protection schemes, relay settings, and coordination studies for substations and MV/HV equipment.
Participate in technical meetings with transmission/distribution operators, engineering consultants, and contractors to ensure compliance with connection requirements.
Review and comment on specifications for HV/MV/LV equipment, ensuring compliance with project.
Support internal teams during tender evaluation, equipment selection, and contract negotiations from the grid perspective.
Assist during commissioning and energization phases, including FAT/SAT reviews and documentation sign-offs.
Coordinate with internal project, legal, procurement, and O&M teams to ensure alignment of electrical and grid aspects across the asset lifecycle.
Procurement and supervision of the basic/detailed engineering and applicable regulations of the evacuation infrastructure.
Carrying out Technical Due Diligence of projects.
Who you are:
Graduated in Electrical Engineering.
Skilled in Energy, Power Systems, Power Transmission, Project Portfolio Management, Account Management, Substation, Contract Management, Renewable Energy and Smart Grid.
Good understanding of regulation, Grid Codes, and electrical standards
5-6 years of previous experience with other IPPs, TSO, DSO or Electrical Infrastructure EPC companies.
High level of English (C1).
Advanced computer software skills, including Excel and PowerPoint.
Strong understanding of electrical design principles, HV/MV systems, and grid integration of renewable assets.
Familiar with relevant IEC, IEEE, and national grid codes.
Ability to interpret and comment on technical drawings and protection schemes.
Practical knowledge of protection relays and settings.
Ability to read and verify cable sizing, earthing layouts, and equipment schedules.
Understanding of communication protocols used in SCADA/PPC systems (e.g., IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3).
Familiarity with construction and commissioning phases of grid infrastructure, including witnessing FAT/SAT and energization protocols.
