Senior GNSS & Geodesy Consultant

Senior GNSS & Geodesy Consultant (fulltime) - Salary - £48,679 - £56,792 (dependent on experience) - Hybrid working

Join our dynamic Geodesy and Positioning Navigation and Time (PNT) team

Ordnance Survey work at the intersection of innovation and insight, helping clients navigate emerging technologies such as AI, digital twins, smart mobility, Positioning Navigation and Time (PNT) and climate resilience. Our mission is to ensure that organisations not only keep pace with change but lead it - using location data to drive smarter decisions and better outcomes.

The geodesy and PNT team play a pivotal role to support Ordnance Survey's data collection activities, define the national geodetic infrastructure and support government and commercial organisations. We are at the forefront of building a resilient national PNT framework - one that underpins everything from emergency services and financial systems to transport networks and national security.

At the heart of this effort liesOS Net, our nationwide network of over 110 Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS). This infrastructure forms a strategic national asset, delivering centimetre-level accuracy through real-time GNSS correction services. Originally designed to support surveying, OS Net has evolved into a critical enabler of resilience. As the threats and vulnerabilities to GNSS become more relevant, impactful and understood, the demand for resilient PNT grows.

Looking further ahead, quantum technologies are set to revolutionise PNT. Quantum clocks and inertial sensors promise ultra-precise, satellite-independent positioning. OS is actively exploring how these innovations can complement our existing infrastructure, offering even greater resilience and accuracy.

About the role

In summary, the aim of the role is to identify, develop and deliver innovation, project and operational activities related to Geodesy and Positioning Navigation and Time (PNT); enabling new capability, new opportunities, reduce operational cost and sustaining OS as a thought leader. We are looking for a Senior subject matter expert in the field of Geodesy, GNSS, and the wide PNT (Positioning Navigation and Timing) domain.

Collaborating across OS, government, academia and industry, you will be required to develop nationally critical geodesy and PNT strategic plans and translate them into experiments, development and operational activities. You will provide support to geodesy and OS Net operations - your experience and understanding of geodesy will enable you to work alongside our subject matter experts to deliver national capability.

Developing PNT and geodesy capability will require your detailed understanding of GNSS, enabling you to provide in-depth advice to assist OS to make informed decisions at operational and strategic levels.

Reporting into the Lead PNT Scientist, your expertise will be required to support our positioning and geodesy consultants, research and data scientists, and product teams as we work together to deliver sustainable operations and capability growth.

Here is a snapshot of the technologies that we use

  • Trimble Pivot Platform, Leica Infinity, Python, geodetic and RTK GNSS receivers, GNSS software processing tools (e.g. Bernese, TEQC, RTKLib), spectrum analysers, software defined radios, atomic clocks

What we're looking for

  • A domain expert, ideally educated to master's degree level in geodesy and/or PNT or a related STEM subject. Experience in lieu of a degree is also acceptable.

  • Ideally a member (or applying to be a member) of an applicable professional body, e.g. RIN, RICS.

  • Strong expertise in the application of geodesy and/or PNT. Proven ability to;

    • Translate strategic aims into operational contexts and technical solutions

    • Process and analyse GNSS / geodetic data

    • Test, evaluate and develop environments, including developing and leading equipment and system trials

  • Track record in commissioning and delivering projects and proof of concepts

  • Detailed understanding of GNSS receiver operation and the full GNSS signal-processing chain, GNSS threats and vulnerabilities, and PNT system integration

  • Consultancy experience and proven ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships and manage stakeholders.

  • Ability to communicate detailed technical applications to those with different skills and understanding of the domain.

  • Strong analytical skillset including experience identifying when/where data insight is required. Able to define and analyse data to generate insights and recommendations.
