As Senior Engineering Manager, you'll need to have both the experience and skills to navigate our complex state-of-the-art facilities whilst also maintaining our older estates. This role covers 172,000 square metres, presenting unique challenges and opportunities. It's a rewarding position where no two days are the same, and you'll be part of a fantastic team. Main duties of the jobYou will lead our in-house maintenance team, managing the Engineering Department to ensure all building services and equipment comply with statutory legislation and guidance. Our team comprises Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing trades supported by Engineering Managers, all directly employed NHS staff. We also work with external specialist providers where necessary.
Your strong, consistent background will help you lead and support the team, ensuring clear communication, engagement, and ongoing professional development through performance management and training.
This role is ideal for the right individual with effective skills, experience, and attributes to support the NHS in striving for excellence now and in the future.
You must demonstrate previous experience in planning and managing maintenance of building services in large, complex buildings.
The working hours are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with on-call duties for out-of-hours support. On-call payments are additional to the basic salary. The role includes NHS benefits such as a comprehensive pension scheme (14.3% employer contribution) and 27 days of holiday entitlement to start.

Job responsibilitiesCommunication
- Respond to complaints and concerns empathetically, providing clear and appropriate responses.
- Participate in Trust committees and provide reports related to Engineering services.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure written communication complies with legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Liaise with the Medical Device Management Group regarding Medical Devices.
- Facilitate team briefings, meetings, and performance updates.
- Keep Estates colleagues and the wider Trust informed of statutory and NHS guidance changes.
- Communicate effectively considering individual understanding and backgrounds.
- Engage with MHRA and other regulatory bodies as required.
- Build positive relationships with Safety Inspectors, Risk Managers, and H&S representatives.
- Collaborate with other leads within the Division and clinical locations to deliver patient-focused services.
Reviewing/audit
- Identify opportunities for service improvements.
- Develop management reports on engineering performance, risks, and standards.
- Lead audits and review standards regularly.
- Monitor complex engineering systems to ensure they meet demand and safety standards.
- Investigate complaints and prepare reports on service issues.
- Ensure compliance with HSE guidance and document H&S compliance.
- Participate in Trust H&S meetings and report on engineering compliance.
- Assist in developing and reviewing the Estates Strategy.
Development
- Manage your professional development and registration requirements.
- Hold regular meetings with direct reports to review progress and support development.
- Delegate tasks appropriately, addressing staff concerns and aspirations.
- Encourage suggestions for service improvements.
- Ensure staff have meaningful appraisals and personal development plans.
- Ensure engineering staff are trained for their responsibilities and device maintenance.
- Promote a learning environment within the workplace.
Management
- Manage the Engineering Department to ensure compliance with legislation and guidance.
- Develop and implement departmental procedures and contribute to Trust policies.
- Provide expertise and training for equipment users.
- Manage recruitment, induction, training, and retention of staff, including chairing interviews.
- Ensure adherence to Workforce policies and standards.
- Handle difficult management conversations and meetings.
- Support the Trust Energy Manager (band 7).
- Manage budgets and optimize engineering services for efficiency and sustainability.
- Prepare reports, efficiency schemes, and business cases supporting sustainability initiatives.
- Ensure staff training remains up-to-date.
- Take accountability for the budgets and financial performance of engineering and energy services.
- Develop Trust policies related to key services and equipment.
- Deputise for the Assistant Director of Estates as needed.
- Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chartership in a relevant engineering or building services field.
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience equivalent to a degree or chartership.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Certificate in NHS Management.
- Authorised Person training/qualification in specialist engineering services.
- Membership of a relevant professional organisation.
- Experience in a similar Estates or Facilities role within an NHS or healthcare setting.
- Experience managing teams, budgets, and contracts.
- Technical expertise in highly specialized hospital services and equipment.
- Experience in negotiation and contract management.
- Knowledge of compliance and performance monitoring.
- Experience working within an NHS acute healthcare environment.
- Experience developing collaborative relationships with partners.
- Knowledge of public sector procurement and tendering processes.
This role is subject to a DBS check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.

Salary: £53,755 to £60,504 per annum, pro-rata.
