Senior Engineer - LCC HVDC Control and Protection Systems

Job Description Summary

The energy transition drives an unprecedented growth in demand for and generation of electricity. High voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems play a key role in connecting remote and offshore renewables and reinforcing AC grids. GE Vernova Grid Systems Integration business line offers control and protection solutions for Line Commutated Converter (LCC) HVDC valve technologies. The "brain" of these stations consists of control and protection systems that ensure efficient, safe, and reliable operation. GE Vernova HVDC NPI team requires a Senior Engineer to act as the technical authority for LCC HVDC systems. This role serves as a technical consultant and gatekeeper, ensuring design excellence, leading state-of-the-art technology improvements, and mentoring the next generation of engineering talent.

Job Description Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the recognised expert in LCC HVDC control and protection systems, both internally and externally
• Lead the authoring, review, and governance of system-level and functional requirements for LCC HVDC systems
• Own validation strategies for functional requirements, ensuring performance, reliability, and safety standards are met
• Direct the creation and maintenance of high-quality design specifications across complex sub-systems
• Drive internal and external standardisation, including representation in IEC, CIGRE, and similar professional bodies
• Lead root cause analysis and provide technical authority on major quality, supplier, and field issues
• Support R&D programmes from concept through industrialisation and promote technology synergies across GE Vernova businesses
• Mentor engineering talent, support competence development, and provide technical consultation across the business

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field with a focus on control systems
• Experience working in industrial applications such as HVDC, power electronics, or power systems in a technical lead capacity
• Experience writing formal system and functional requirements and managing validation and verification activities
• Strong experience in control and protection algorithm development using MATLAB/Simulink and conducting EMT studies
• Deep technical understanding of LCC technology, including firing angle control, synchronization logic, commutation failure prediction and mitigation, DC line protection and recovery sequences, and AC/DC interaction and reactive power control
• Strong understanding of large-scale, high-reliability, high-performance real-time control systems
• Ability to apply advanced technology to resolve complex technical challenges

Preferred Qualifications

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interface with senior leadership and customers
• Proven ability to lead complex engineering processes in demanding environments
• Recognised industry expertise in LCC HVDC control and protection
• Willingness to travel for business and technical consultation as required
