Job Description

Job Title: Senior Engineer - Combat Systems (External Communications)

Location: Frimley, Filton, Portsmouth Broad Oak or Weymouth, Hybrid- 3 days per week onsite, occasional UK travel with expenses paid

What you'll be doing:

You'll help capture and agree technical requirements for external communications systems, translating User Needs, Concept of Operations and Concept of Use into clear functional and technical specifications. You will review solutions against contractual and regulatory requirements while supporting the definition of performance measures, acceptance criteria and lifecycle verification activities.

You'll maintain controlled design documentation, contribute to verification and qualification planning, and manage evidence within requirements tools such as IBM DOORS. Expect to support installation, integration and commissioning activities, working with suppliers and stakeholders to ensure systems are successfully delivered, accepted and ready for operational use.

Core duties:

  • You demonstrate a considerable understanding of core engineering values and apply them effectively to technical challenges
  • You will show awareness of Product Safety, SHE requirements and their importance within engineering environments
  • You'll communicate clearly with stakeholders, building good working relationships across technical and non-technical teams
  • You bring the ability to interpret technical information and contribute to structured engineering discussions and strategies
  • Your approach reflects a proactive commitment to continuous professional development and expanding technical knowledge
  • Expect to progress your knowledge while working toward becoming a recognised Subject Matter Expert in your field

The ECS (External Communications Systems) Team:

You'll join a close-knit, collaborative team that takes pride in sharing knowledge and solving complex engineering challenges together. You will build robust relationships with suppliers, customers and internal teams, using your stakeholder engagement skills to influence outcomes and support successful programme delivery.

You'll contribute to Requirements Management and the testing and integration of equipment within wider submarine systems, gaining valuable technical exposure and real accountability. Expect considerable visibility across programmes, ongoing professional development support and a clear pathway to grow your knowledge toward Subject Matter Expert level.
