Job Description
Job title: Senior Construction and Engineering Underwriter
Location: London
PURPOSE OF ROLE
Lawes Consulting Group is proud to be working with a leading global (Re)insurer specialising in Construction & Engineering risks. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Underwriter to join a respected team, playing a key role in assessing and managing complex risks while supporting international growth and collaboration.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review and underwrite new business based on risk assessment and market data
- Negotiate terms with brokers and clients to optimise profitability
- Ensure all underwriting decisions follow internal policies and procedures
- Work closely with global teams to align processes and maintain documentation
- Support junior underwriters through knowledge sharing and peer reviews
- Uphold compliance standards and contribute to regulatory requirements
- Strengthen and maintain broker and client relationships
- Contribute to business planning and new product development
- Collaborate with internal teams (Actuarial, Legal, Compliance, etc.)
- Promote brand presence through marketing and relationship-building efforts
EXPERIENCE
- 10+ years in underwriting or related insurance experience, preferably in Construction & Engineering
- Progressing toward or holding CII qualification
- Strong understanding of underwriting practices and market dynamics
DAY-TO-DAY
- Assess incoming proposals and issue underwriting decisions
- Communicate with brokers to negotiate terms and manage expectations
- Maintain accurate documentation and risk files
- Attend meetings with cross-functional and international teams
- Monitor portfolio performance and support business development
- Assist with training and mentoring colleagues
- Stay updated on market trends and compliance requirements
SKILLS
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Team player with strong interpersonal skills
- Able to prioritise, multitask, and perform under pressure
- Proactive, self-driven, and customer-focused
