GRADE: Senior Clinical fellow
POST: This post is for 12-24 months offering 6-12 months rotations, based on clinical need of the department, between the:
- Paediatric and Neonatal Unit at the Bedford Hospital
- Paediatric Unit at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital
- Neonatal Unit at Luton and Dunstable Hospital
Salary scale: Between £41,750-£64,288 (Basic salary and out of hours as per junior doctors Contract). Overseas training experience at the same level will be recognised as per the pay point scale described in NHS employer section.
Main duties of the job- Attend Ward rounds and outpatient clinics.
- Assist in the day-to-day running of inpatient paediatric ward, CAU, Ambulatory Care and Neonatal Unit, and supervise and support Tier 1 doctors.
- Examine children with suspected or actual child abuse at the request of Social Services Department or Police; prepare appropriate medical records and attend Case Conferences with the consultant.
- Keep necessary records, initialled and dated, along with other administrative duties, including discharge and clinic letters.
- Handle occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s), in consultation where possible with senior and junior colleagues.
- Read and follow any protocols of medical cover laid down (either in writing or verbally).
- Seek advice of a senior colleague when in doubt and escalated issues appropriately.
The proposed timetable will be discussed with applicants. This will need to be changed from time to time to respond to the demands of the service. The appointee undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, outside normally rostered duties as an essential part of providing safe patient care.

Job responsibilitiesA full shift working pattern not exceeding 48 hours including prospective cover for annual and study leave. The on-call registrars are supported by Tier 1 trainees both day and night. There is onsite consultant support until 22:00 and off-site cover overnight.

- Keep such records as may be required. These must be dated and initialled, together with any other related administrative duties, including discharge and clinic letters.
- Handle duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s), in consultation where possible with colleagues both senior and junior.
- Agree to read and follow any protocols of medical cover laid down (either in writing or verbally).
- In case of any difficulties ensure that the advice of a senior colleague is sought, escalated appropriately.
- NOTE: Specific duties may vary from time to time with the circumstances existing and the developing competence and interests of the members of the team.
- Medical Degree - MBBS or equivalent
- Additional relevant clinical experience - APLS/EPALS/ NLS
- Full/Eligible for GMC Registration with a licence to practice without sponsorship
- Completion of Foundation competences in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice, including: Good acute clinical care, Maintaining good medical practice, Good relationships and communication with patients, Good working relationships with colleagues, Good teaching and training, Professional behaviour and probity
- Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory DBS clearance
- Demonstrates awareness of ethical principles, safety, confidentiality and consent
- Occupational Health clearance
- Excellent all-round experience of DGH work
- Minimum of 2/3 years' experience in Paediatrics and Neonatology
- Proficient in basic paediatric procedures- cannulation / LP / airway management / UVC / Intraosseous access
- Ability to work independently, but aware of own limitations and know when to seek advice from senior colleagues
- Experience of working at registrar level
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: Undergraduate medical training in English, Evidence of IELTS score or equivalent as per GMC
- Understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk, management and evidence-based practice
- Evidence of participation in QIP
- Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements
- Interest in and ability to contribute to teaching and learning of more junior doctors and medical students
- Evidence of teaching /presentations
- Flexible attitude, team player with good management skills
- Capacity to work effectively under pressure and remain objective in highly emotive/pressurised situations
- Situation awareness with awareness of own limitations and when to ask for help
- Capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively with others and discuss treatment options with patients in a way they can understand
- Demonstrates effective judgement and decision-making skills
- Demonstrate leadership and management skills
- Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance urgent and important demands, follow instructions
