ONE Environments is seeking a Senior / Principal Landscape Architect, with a focus in Education, Design Leadership, and Nature-Based Places .

Why ONE Environments - and why Newcastle?

Do you want to work on nationally significant education projects, have real influence over design and delivery, and enjoy an excellent quality of life?

ONE Environments is an award-winning, employee-owned landscape architecture and environmental design practice based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The North East offers a strong creative culture, outstanding landscapes and a quality of life that's increasingly hard to find elsewhere - without compromising professional ambition.

You'll be based in our own studio at Sailors Bethel, a characterful building with free parking, excellent public transport links and easy access to the wider region.

About us

We design landscapes that connect people, nature and purpose.

Our work focuses on schools, colleges, universities and public realm projects across the UK, where we are trusted design partners to leading DfE framework contractors and act as technical advisors on national education frameworks.

In 2025, we were proud to be awarded education & environment specialist consultancy of the year, recognising our leadership in education landscapes, nature-based solutions and environmental performance.

We are a friendly, supportive and collaborative team, and as an employee ownership trust (EOT) everyone has a genuine stake in the success of the practice and a voice in how it evolves.

The role

We are seeking a senior / principal landscape architect to help lead and shape our growing education portfolio.

You will work on projects across the UK, so this role involves travel to sites, meetings and workshops around the country. You'll lead the design and delivery of school, college and campus landscapes from early concepts and planning through to technical design and construction.

This is a role with real responsibility, visibility and influence, offering scope to grow into senior leadership and, for the right person over time, director-level responsibility within the practice.

Key responsibilities

lead landscape design and coordination on education and campus projects
shape strong, buildable design from concept through to delivery
integrate nature-based solutions, SuDS, BNG, UGF and biodiversity throughout all stages
prepare, manage and review planning and technical information
represent ONE confidently in client, contractor and design team meetings
mentor junior colleagues and contribute to internal best practice
support bids, frameworks and the strategic growth of the practice

What we're looking for:

chartered landscape architect (CMLI) or equivalent
typically 3+ years post-chartership experience
strong design thinking paired with technical and delivery confidence
experience in education, public sector or complex multidisciplinary projects
experience of LVIA is advantageous but not essential
an interest in developing landscape planning and assessment skills, including LVIA
comfortable leading work while remaining hands-on
confident communicator who enjoys collaboration and responsibility
proficient in AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite (Revit experience welcomed - training provided)

What we offer:

£40k-£55k salary DOE
genuine long-term progression opportunities within an employee-owned practice
annual tax-free EOT bonus (first £3,600 tax free)
employer pension contributions
fully electric / hybrid car salary sacrifice scheme
33 days annual leave (including bank holidays)
half-day Fridays and flexible hybrid working
private medical insurance (AXA - including dental and optical)
tailored training, coaching and mentoring plans, aligned to individual strengths and career ambitions, including support to develop LVIA and landscape planning expertise where required
relocation allowance
team study trips to leading UK and European projects
a friendly, design-led studio culture where quality, trust and balance matter
