Job DescriptionWhat if you could do the kind of work the world needs?
At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.
Why Are We Hiring?
The People Movement team has undergone rapid growth over the last two years - in part mirroring WSP's global growth - but also due to the team pro-actively pushing into new areas to unlock this vast potential from our colleagues and clients. As a result, the team has already trained and recruited staff at junior levels but now requires a more-experienced consultant able to take the lead on the technical delivery of projects.
The UK's People Movement team is by far the largest team globally within WSP to offer pedestrian movement analysis services. As such, we are considered a Centre of Excellence and collaborate with colleagues from around the world on Rail, Sports, Aviation, Cultural, Tall Buildings, Major Event Planning and many other sectors, providing a diverse range of challenges and experiences.
About the Role - Technical
We require an experienced Pedestrian Modeller who can undertake hands-on modelling as well as delegate to, and supervise, junior staff.
You will attend and may sometimes present at project meetings to key stakeholders and clients, supported by more-senior staff.
Interfacing pro-actively with other disciplines is a key expectation in order to obtain latest design and operational inputs as well as to inform them of passenger flow spatial requirements.
You may be asked to input into and manage the scope and programme for smaller projects, monitoring financials and progress on an ongoing basis, or parts of larger projects, directed by a Project Manager / Project Director.
Finally, you will be responsible for technical task management, delegating to others and ensuring checks, reviews and approvals are undertaken for technical work and reports for projects on which you are engaged.
It is likely that you will be involved in Rail projects as well as from other sectors (such as Sports, Cultural, High-Rise) according to the team's pipeline of work.
About the Role - Management
In addition to managing and delivering project work, this role offers an opportunity for those wishing to develop wider skills such as:
Business Development - networking with WSP colleagues in the UK and overseas; contributing to marketing material;
Staff coaching / training - this may be new starters with no prior experience needing to learn all aspects of model development, analysis and reporting, as well as helping to improve junior staff with constructive feedback; encouraging Best Practice within junior staff
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate
- Excellent pedestrian modelling skills - particularly Bentley Legion - but may include PTV VisWalk, or Mass Motion. Complementary (but not essential) software skills could include CAST, Mass Motion, VISUM, VISSIM, S-Paramics, SATURN, AIMSUM, LINSIG, TRANSYT, ArcGIS, Power BI.
- Experience of supervising junior staff, delegating work and checking technical work
- Some experience in project management (estimating work complete, remaining tasks and the budget / time required to do so - and ensuring projects are delivered on time and budget).
Key Skills and Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree in a numerate or transport discipline
- Masters level degree in a transport discipline would be beneficial but is not a requirement
- Good knowledge of, and experience in, the application of relevant pedestrian planning guidance (e.g. LUL's SPSG, The Green Guide, Network Rail Station Capacity Planning Guidance) and static capacity assessment techniques (e.g. PCL)
- Communication skills with experience communicating ideas to a non-technical audience - through written reports, technical meetings and formal presentations.
- Strong analytical/critical thinker able to interpret numerical results and extract understanding
- Appreciation of project delivery within a commercial organisation (e.g. H&S, programmes, risks and issues, resourcing, budgets)
- Any other Transport Planning experience within a commercial environment may be beneficial - for example supporting Development Planning applications through Transport Assessments. Similarly, knowledge of particular sectors (e.g. Airports, Sports/Event Management) could bring advantages to the team
