Location: Bristol (Abbey Wood) - Hybrid working ( 3 days on site)

Rate: Up to £550 per day (Inside IR35)

Duration: Contract until 31/03/2026

Clearance: Active SC Clearance (Sole UK Nationals Only)

The Role

We are recruiting for three (3) Safety Engineers to join the Land Systems operating centre of a major UK defence organisation.

Operating at the Professional II (PII) level, this is a hands on practitioner role. You will work within a dedicated Engineering Skills Group, providing expert advice and guidance to support the delivery of Acquisition Safety policy.

Your core focus will be the through life management of project safety risk, ensuring that equipment delivered to the Front Line Commands is safe, suitable, and compliant. This is an opportunity to own the generation of technical safety requirements and manage the day to day safety engineering artefacts for complex platforms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safety Management Systems (SMS): Develop, manage, and maintain effective Safety Management Systems for assigned projects.
  • Hazard & Risk Management: Identify and analyse hazards, evaluating risk reduction measures and ensuring they are adequately documented and managed.
  • Artefact Delivery: Own the generation, update, review, and endorsement of safety artefacts, including Safety Cases and Hazard Logs.
  • Assurance & Audit: Lead on safety assurance activities within your technical discipline, developing assurance plans and monitoring compliance.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Educate stakeholders on relevant legislation, regulation and policy (including ASEMS/POSMS) to ensure technical documentation meets defence standards.
  • Stakeholder Management: Oversee contractual safety aspects and manage contractors performing safety activities to ensure requirements are captured correctly.
Skills & Experience Essential:
  • Nationality & Clearance: Must be a sole UK National holding active SC Clearance.
  • Safety Practitioner: Proven experience in a Safety Engineering role, specifically within a highly regulated environment (Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Nuclear).
  • Risk Methodologies: Experience applying hazard identification and analysis techniques (e.g., HazID, HazOP, FTA, ETA).
  • Defence Standards: Working knowledge of ASEMS (Acquisition Safety and Environmental Management System) and POSMS.
  • Qualifications: Hold a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) qualification at RQF Level 4 or higher (or equivalent experience).
Desirable:
  • Professional Registration: Registered as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or equivalent.
  • Land Domain: Previous experience working with Land Systems or complex vehicle integration.
