Role overviewThe Safeguarding Lead is the expert in residence for Tes on all safeguarding matters that impact schools. The role leads on safeguarding training content, ensuring the creation and maintenance of high-quality, compliant and engaging safeguarding courses that enable schools not just to meet their responsibilities, but to create embedded safeguarding cultures.
The role is able to commission, edit and evaluate safeguarding content and has an in-depth knowledge of safeguarding in practice.
The Safeguarding Lead also provides insight, expertise and thought leadership externally. The head of safeguarding will be comfortable providing media commentary, speaking at events and producing strategic and high-quality thought leadership content on safeguarding.
They will have an excellent network within the safeguarding community and be able to build strong and lasting relationships within the education sector.
Key Responsibilities Safeguarding Thought Leadership- Provide authoritative safeguarding expertise across the organisation, advising teams on policy implications, risk, sector expectations, and best practice.
- Represent Tes at sector events, panels, conferences, and external stakeholder meetings.
Maintain deep, current knowledge of KCSIE, Working Together, Ofsted frameworks, and international equivalents. - Maintain awareness of developments across the wider safeguarding and wellbeing landscape.
- Identify emerging safeguarding issues, legislative changes, and sector trends, translating them into actionable insight for Tes.
- Develop and maintain relationships with external safeguarding experts, organisations and partners whose insight can strengthen the accuracy, relevance and credibility of Tes's safeguarding content.
- Create high-quality and strategic thought leadership content.
- Maintain the network and sector relationships to ensure content commissioning is timely and aligned with policy and sector developments and need.
- Accurate commissioning aligned with Tes Teaching and Professional Learning Framework standards and Tes commercial objectives.
- Editing copy to high-quality standards, with key stakeholders as part of the process and ensure all content aligns with Tes Teaching and Professional Learning Framework standards and Tes commercial objectives.
- Maintaining existing content so it remains compliant, up to date and commercially aligned.
- Extensive and recent experience in safeguarding or child protection within education, social care, or related fields.
- Experience commissioning or producing safeguarding content, training, or guidance.
- Experience influencing senior stakeholders and representing an organisation externally.
- In depth understanding of KCSIE, Working Together, Ofsted expectations, and wider UK safeguarding law.
- Awareness of international safeguarding frameworks (desirable).
- Strong understanding of safeguarding issues, online harm, and risk management.
- Awareness of accessibility standards, inclusive education practices, best practices for delivering learning.
- Excellent written communication skills; able to create, adapt, and quality assure safeguarding content for multiple audiences.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret risk, data, and policy implications.
- High emotional intelligence and the ability to work sensitively on complex safeguarding matters.
- Confident presenting, speaking and contributing at events, panels, and public forums.
Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholders.
- DSL training level 3 (required or willingness to complete).
- A teaching qualification (QTS), social work qualification, or equivalent safeguarding related professional qualification (strongly preferred).
