Job overview

The post is a full time appointment from 1st October 2025 - 6th October 2026, which provides experience in a busy symptomatic breast unit and training in oncoplastic breast surgery techniques including reconstructions and lipomodelling. There are opportunities to take part in unit audits. We work closely with plastic surgeons at the Royal Free Hospital. Duties are based at St Albans City Hospital working in Breast Surgery with some sessions at Watford General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The main duties involve care of elective and emergency breast patients on the ward and supervision of the junior SHOs and House Surgeons. The post holder will attend operation sessions and outpatient clinics and the weekly breast multidisciplinary meeting. You will work closely with nursing, professional, technical, administrative and support staff. You will ensure adequate clinical notes are made in accordance with good medical practice. You will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge and undertake administration related to patient care and running of the department. Administrative duties will require liaison with the management team to control the department budget and provide clinical input to business planning and service development.

You will participate in governance, risk management, and continuing medical education activities; maintain a personal development plan and annual appraisal. Education of all staff caring for patients, including junior medical staff and multidisciplinary teams, is a key responsibility. Clinical research is encouraged with time allowed to undertake research projects in your area of interest.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As part of clinical governance, the post-holder will participate in monthly surgical audits and clinical governance meetings. They will ensure appropriate action is taken regarding governance and risk management in line with regulations, policies and procedures. Under guidance of the Lead Doctor and Associate Medical Director, they will engage in continuing professional development, annual appraisal, and a personal development plan. The post-holder will educate those caring for patients and support multidisciplinary teams. Clinical research is encouraged, with time allocated to research projects. Excellent communication across colleagues and opportunities for managerial skills development are essential.

Person specification Education and qualifications:
  • MB BS or equivalent
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Eligible for full GMC registration
  • Membership of ABS
Knowledge:
  • Experience in management of symptomatic and screen-detected breast cancers in outpatient and surgical settings
  • Ability to take responsibility for clinical care with appropriate escalation to consultant
  • Commitment to teaching, both clinical and operative skill
  • Commitment to CME/CPD
  • Understanding of audit and its use to drive service improvement
  • Awareness of risk management and clinical governance processes
  • Understanding of appraisal and revalidation
  • Involvement in audit in previous posts
  • Basic management and organisational skills
  • Interest in developing the advertised area
Experience:
  • Experience and demonstrable skill in management of symptomatic and screen-detected breast cancers in outpatient and surgical settings
  • Advanced IT skills including word processing, spreadsheets and databases
  • Knowledge of breast oncoplastic and reconstruction techniques
  • Engagement in research and applying findings to clinical problems
  • Publication of relevant clinical research papers
