Job Description

The Research Scientist/Engineer role provides critical technical support on a range of field and office-based research projects/activities that improve the performance and efficiency of our physical assets and provide data/information to support long-term asset management.

What you'll be doing as a Research Scientist/Engineer (Clean Water Networks)

You'll support the development, briefing, and technical input to ensure correct engineering solutions, outline designs, and technical requirements within projects. You'll be part of a cohesive, sustainable engineering structure that guides Thames Water's engineering requirements into AMP8 and beyond. The workload will mainly focus on the water network, with some support for water treatment activities.

Key duties include:

  1. Innovation trial support: Supporting the setup and operational monitoring of trials, with technician/contractor assistance as needed.
  2. Analysis and interpretation: Capturing, analysing data, and documenting research and trials.
  3. Safety, Health, and the Environment: Upholding health and safety standards and considering environmental impact.
  4. Project support and knowledge transfer: Assisting project managers in generating information for the Project Management Office (PMO).
  5. Horizon scanning: Creating and maintaining a horizon scan for relevant technologies and strategies.
  6. Business resilience: Identifying ways to increase the resilience of Thames Water's infrastructure.
  7. Business performance: Finding solutions to reduce leakage and water supply interruptions.
  8. External bids: Gaining skills and experience to contribute to bid materials for initiatives like the Ofwat Water Breakthrough Challenge.

Base location: Hybrid - Kempton Park Water Treatment Works, TW13 6XH. Expected to attend the office at least two days a week, with flexibility to travel within 30 minutes on remote days.

Working pattern or hours: 36 hours, Monday-Friday

Necessary requirements: Valid UK driving licence due to role nature.

  • A degree in science or engineering, or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Industry experience in a related field.
  • Technical knowledge of the water industry or utilities.
  • Practical skills in operation and maintenance of pilot plants.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills.
  • Proficiency with company IT systems.
  • An innovative, creative problem-solving mindset.
  • Curiosity and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
