Role Overview

We are looking for a Research Engineer to join the Applied AI team at InstaDeep and push the boundaries of AI for Industrial Optimization. You will design, implement, develop and deploy state-of-the-art reinforcement learning algorithms and research ideas for real-world optimization challenges.

Research Engineers at InstaDeep are involved at every step of the project life cycle, including providing technical expertise and establishing projects before sales, driving R&D for POCs, developing MVPs and deployable industrialized solutions.

This role requires the applicant to engage in applied research and development to choose and adapt existing techniques - and sometimes also the design of new techniques - to best solve the problem at hand!

About Applied AI

The Applied AI team at InstaDeep is working on large industrial optimization problems for InstaDeep's clients such as Deutsche Bahn, Frankfurt Airport and many others. We utilize deep reinforcement learning and high-performance computing methods to design AI optimizers for daily use in production.

Responsibilities

• Research, design, and implement scalable deep learning and reinforcement learning algorithms to best leverage modern hardware and distributed computing systems (GPUs, TPUs, etc.).
• Write production-grade code.
• Report and present your research and development work internally and externally, tailoring communication to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with AI researchers, engineers, product managers, and business development teams.
• Represent InstaDeep at technical conferences, customer meetings, and other events when needed.

Requirements

• A university degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning or a related field.
• Proven professional experience in research or applied machine learning roles in the domain of Reinforcement Learning.
• Solid understanding of software development, data engineering, ML, and RL principles.
• Proficiency in Python and modern ML libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX).
• Solid understanding of and experience with version control workflows (GitHub, GitLab) and clean coding practices.
• A right to work full-time in the United Kingdom.
• Working from our Paddington office at least 3 days per week.

Nice to have

• Prior experience with applying Reinforcement Learning algorithms to combinatorial optimization problems.
• Hands-on experience in high-performance computing environments (e.g., Kubernetes, Ray, Dask).
• Expertise in related fields such as Computer Vision, Representation Learning, or Simulation Environments.
