Job Description
Overview

R&D Technician at Alcon, a global leader in eye care. We are recruiting a R&D & Moulding Technician on a 12 month fixed term contract in Cork. The main responsibility is to support and drive R&D Engineering activities including specification, procurement, installation, validation and implementation of new equipment, including moulding and mould tooling for the development and manufacture of new products or new processes at the Alcon Ireland site.

Support the maintenance of R&D Engineering Group equipment such as moulding, curing, metrology, cleaning, chemical process and packaging systems. A typical day may include: assisting with specification, design and procurement of new equipment; process development, characterisation and optimisation activities; generation and execution of validation documents; maintenance of equipment and utilities; moulding machine set up & tooling changes; assembly/build/installation of new equipment; identification/setup of spare parts; liaising with suppliers and contractors; first response technical support; daily reporting to supervisor/project engineer; achieving project milestones; supporting safety risk assessments; investigating and documenting process issues; ensuring Quality System compliance and adherence to H&S and environmental requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Assist R&D Engineering in specification, design, procurement and validation of new equipment.
  • Support process development, characterisation and optimisation.
  • Generate and execute validation documents (risk assessments, validation assessments, commissioning).
  • Maintain R&D Engineering equipment and utilities, including moulding, curing, metrology, cleaning, chemical process and packaging systems.
  • Set up & tool moulding machines for operation, including preventative maintenance.
  • Assemble, build and install new equipment on site.
  • Identify and source spare parts for new or existing equipment.
  • Liaise with suppliers and external contractors, obtain quotations, method statements and risk assessments.
  • Provide first response technical support to all R&D Engineering process and utilities equipment.
  • Report daily to supervisor/project engineer, highlighting concerns early.
  • Achieve project milestones on time and within budget.
  • Support safety risk assessments for new equipment and processes.
  • Investigate and document process issues, report findings and solutions to engineering.
  • Ensure continual Quality System compliance and adherence to established and evolving Alcon QS requirements.
  • Maintain adherence to health, safety and environmental requirements.
Qualifications
  • Preferred Level7 qualification in an Engineering or Technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 5years previous experience in a similar technical role in the Medical Device Industry.
  • Preferred: 5+years' experience in a similar technical role in the Medical Device Industry.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment issues.
  • Familiarity with robotics, PLCs and vision systems.
  • Technical competence in operating and repairing highly automated equipment.
  • Good understanding of networks and basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with Veeva, Maximo and Teamcenter.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and solve problems using structured techniques.
  • Knowledge of ISO, FDA and GMP standards.
