Job Description

Senior Python/Platform Engineer - SC Cleared - Remote - £575 per day Inside IR35

We are looking for an experienced Senior Python Developer/Platform Engineer to join a nationally critical technology programme supporting a secure, high-availability platform within the UK's Critical National Infrastructure.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior engineer with strong Python, AWS, Terraform and CI/CD experience who enjoys combining application development with modern platform engineering practices.

The role is predominantly remote, with an expectation to attend the Leeds office approximately once per month, although occasional additional onsite attendance may be required.

Senior Python/Platform Engineer - SC Cleared - Remote

The Role

You'll work within an experienced engineering team responsible for developing and maintaining complex, secure and highly available software systems.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing high-quality, secure Python applications and services
  • Supporting the development and operation of cloud-native platforms
  • Building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines that optimise development velocity, security and reliability
  • Provisioning cloud infrastructure using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code
  • Maintaining high standards of code quality and engineering governance
  • Managing and monitoring CI processes and automated quality gates
  • Working with product and engineering teams to improve how cloud-native applications are built, deployed and observed
  • Implementing Secure SDLC and "shift-left" security practices, including static and dynamic analysis
  • Supporting investigation and resolution of incidents across complex software systems
  • Improving observability, reliability and operational performance
  • Developing reusable Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD components
  • Participating in an on-call rota once fully up to speed, currently approximately 1 week in 6

Essential Skills & Experience

We're looking for strong experience across:

  • Python - senior-level application development experience
  • AWS or strong experience with another major public cloud platform
  • Terraform and Infrastructure as Code
  • GitHub Actions or comparable CI/CD pipeline technologies
  • Building and maintaining secure, reliable CI/CD systems
  • Cloud-native application development
  • Observability and monitoring tooling
  • Secure software development practices
  • Strong understanding of the Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC)
  • Developing secure code for complex software systems
  • Investigating and supporting production incidents

Desirable Experience

It would be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience promoting platform engineering and software engineering best practices
  • Experience working as a subject matter expert alongside product and engineering teams
  • An understanding of how Platform/DevOps teams can act as a force multiplier for development teams
  • Experience creating reusable and easily consumable Infrastructure as Code
  • Experience building reusable CI/CD jobs, templates or components
  • Experience implementing automated security tooling including SAST/DAST or similar approaches

Security Clearance & Nationality Requirements

Please read the following requirements carefully before applying.

Due to the highly secure nature of the programme, applicants must be a sole British national and hold active, transferable SC clearance.

To be considered, your existing National Security Vetting clearance must meet the required transfer criteria. This includes:

  • SC clearance must be current and have more than 12 months remaining before expiry, ideally 18 months or more
  • The clearance must not be more than 10 years old
  • You must have taken up a cleared post within 6 months of the clearance originally being granted
  • You must have worked on a UK Government contract, for a Government department or for a Police Force in a role requiring NSV clearance within the last 12 months
  • You must not have resided overseas for more than 6 months during any break in service between relevant Government contracts

Applicants must be sole British nationals and hold only a UK/British passport. Dual nationals cannot be considered for this position. This includes individuals who retain other forms of nationality/citizenship rights or relevant overseas identity documentation such as OCI or NICOP.

This temporary contract is inside IR35 and will require working under the direction of the client delivery manager as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will follow established delivery processes and working practices.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and be eligible for UK Security Vetting at SC/DV level. Clearance sponsorship will be provided where required.
