What is the purpose of this role?

Lead functional engineering and asset management activities, providing professional engineering advisory and assurance capabilities, and advising Operations Directors.

What will this role involve?
  1. Ensure a professional engineering assurance service is provided and is fully effective, including technical audits, briefings for key staff, and advisory services for all P-way engineering aspects.
  2. Provide strategic support to Rail P-way Solutions to support business growth.
  3. Manage development projects and initiatives, interfacing with partners, suppliers, and customers on asset management issues.
  4. Utilize technical and assurance capabilities to enhance performance across the business, its customers, and industry sectors.
  5. Develop and strengthen relationships with senior safety assurance and technical managers in key customers and industry bodies such as Network Rail, RSSB, ORR, and HMRI.
  6. Monitor developments in the UK and internationally that could impact asset capability and economics, and the support and consultancy provided.
  7. Ensure the effective deployment of professional and technical resources, including recruitment, training, and development.
  8. Have direct responsibility for three Chief Engineers, with safety and compliance reporting lines, and oversight of additional functional areas.
  9. Support activities of Track Engineers and Managers indirectly through the Chief Engineer's leadership.
What are we looking for?
  1. Chartered Engineer and member of a relevant professional engineering institution.
  2. Degree in engineering or a scientific discipline.
  3. Good understanding of railway industry structure and dynamics.
  4. Financial and commercial awareness with practical experience.
  5. Ability to critically analyze standards in terms of compliance, contractual obligations, asset management, and business development.
  6. Extensive railway engineering management experience or comparable Safety Case controlled industry experience.
  7. Proven engineering management skills.
  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  9. Team player with good influencing skills to gain trust and respect.
  10. Environmental awareness, IOSH Working Safely certification, and Toolbox Talk experience.
