John Lewis E-Commerce & Digital is responsible for delivering a leading digital customer experience across web and mobile apps, as well as omnichannel services in stores and contact centres. Technology is critical in our fast-paced retail environment, where over 50% of revenue comes from digital channels.

The supporting technology includes domain-driven microservice architecture on a digital platform, composable SaaS, legacy applications being modernized, all integrated to serve our customers reliably and securely.

At a glance
  • Contract type - This position is a permanent contract.
  • Salary - £75,000 - £140,000
  • Flexible Working - Hybrid role, primarily from home and London Head Office, with occasional visits to other locations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Align engineering strategy with business objectives, influence operations, and guide team structures and practices.
  • Revisit legacy microservices and extend digital tech into stores.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and engineering teams, including senior staff and specialists.
  • Ensure delivery of innovative, high-quality software solutions.
Essential skills/experience
  • Strong engineering background with experience in modern techniques like Continuous Delivery and Domain Driven Design.
  • Experience implementing package solutions in complex environments.
  • Leadership experience across multiple teams and influencing large investments.
  • Knowledge of architectural styles and integration patterns.
  • Techniques to improve system resilience, performance, security, and evolvability.
  • Experience with Lean and Systems Thinking.
Desirable skills/experience
  • ECommerce or retail experience.
  • Experience working with legacy systems.
  • Hands-on software engineering experience.
  • Management or enterprise architecture experience.
