This role provides a structured pathway into His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service while helping maintain safety, security, and rehabilitation within the prison system.
Candidates must meet the qualifications for Civil Service nationality and be at least eighteen at the time of employment in order to apply. You must have lived in the UK for the previous three years in order to work in a high security prison (Category A).
Employment Details- Employment Types: Full time, Part time, or Shared
- Annual Salary Range: £33,746-£38,003
- Location: Leeds (initial training at HMP Whitemoor for 23 months before permanent posting at HMP Leeds)
- Accommodation support up to £750 per month for a maximum of 23 months.
- Monthly travel expense reimbursement between HMP Whitemoor and HMP Humber.
- £1,500 recruitment and retention incentive at 12 and 23 months.
- Paid monthly trip home during the first 23 months.

As a prison officer you will:
- Maintain safety, security, and order within the prison environment.
- Assist in the rehabilitation and support of inmates through mentoring, counselling or educational activities.
- Enforce prison rules, procedures, and national security regulations.
- Conduct routine inspections, monitor behaviour and respond to incidents.
- Work in shift patterns including weekends, public holidays, evenings and nights.
- At least 18 years old.
- Fulfil civil service nationality requirements.
- Pass a medical and fitness evaluation, including vision and hearing standards.
- Prior UK residence of at least three years for Category A prisons.
- Strong communication and persuasion skills.
- Commitment to excellence and resilience under pressure.
- Empathy and the ability to build professional relationships with inmates.
- Republic of Ireland citizens.
- Commonwealth citizens permitted to work in the UK.
- Individuals with established or pre settled status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS).
- Eligible Turkish nationals under civil service privileges and relatives.
Weekly shift hours determine pay. The initial 37 hour contract applies during training; options exist to work additional 39 or 41 hours per week post training. Starting pay is £33,746 at HMP Whitemoor.
Assessment ProcessThe selection process includes:
- Stage 1 online assessment - judgement and maths skills.
- Stage 2 online test - task based assessment of traits and behaviours.
- Online Assessment Centre (OAC) for skills, traits and abilities evaluation.
- Potential Skilled Worker Visa sponsorship.
- Starting salary from £33,746 per year.
- Accommodation support up to £750 per month.
