The OpportunityWe have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Principal Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. This is a hybrid position with shared office space in Belfast. We welcome applications from Senior Engineers across Northern Ireland.
Our 130-strong Belfast Design Hub delivers local, national, and international projects for clients including the Department for Infrastructure Roads, Translink, National Highways, Transport Scotland, and Network Rail. Our multidisciplinary team covers Highway Engineering, Bridge/Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, River & Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Traffic Engineering/Transport Planning, as well as being the BIM Centre of Excellence for Amey. This ecosystem offers our clients a one-stop shop and our staff opportunities to grow and develop in a knowledge-rich environment with supportive specialists.
The roleOur Principal Highways Engineer plays an important part within the Highways and Designated Funds Design team, working alongside our client, National Highways. As a Principal Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on highways schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers. Responsibilities include:
- Acting as a technical team leader, providing advice, guidance, and supervision to technical teams, operational managers, clients, and suppliers.
- Leading the preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to ensure quality, cost, and schedule criteria are met.
- Managing project budgets and controlling costs associated with deliverables.
- Liaising with client and supplier representatives, presenting proposals, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
- Contributing to and leading bid preparations and work-winning activities, including technical and commercial proposals.
- Driving health and safety practices within the team.
- Extensive experience and expertise in the relevant technical field, likely from a Senior Engineer role or similar.
- Ability to produce and lead technically sound engineering solutions complying with standards and client requirements.
- Experience managing project-related health, safety, and welfare tasks, e.g., Amey's IMS and CDM Regulations.
- Capability to act as engineering lead, e.g., Contractor's Engineering Manager for Network Rail schemes.
- Knowledge of design and specification processes, with ability to manage teams and projects.
- Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools, with ability to review and validate work.
- Understanding of CDM, risk assessment, hazard management, and acting as Principal Designer.
- People management skills, capable of influencing technical teams across locations and disciplines.
- Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent professional license.
