The Principal Engineer is responsible for the execution and leadership of technical analysis tasks within project and tender scopes. Reporting to the Project Technical Manager or Tender Lead, the role involves planning and delivering analysis work scopes to meet internal and client expectations, while ensuring compliance with industry standards and internal quality systems.
Given the seniority of the role, the Principal Engineer is expected to manage multiple concurrent assignments, lead small technical teams when required, and proactively contribute to cross-discipline collaboration across engineering functions.

Technical Delivery:

  • Perform independent analysis of flexible and riser installations, including basis setup, execution, and reporting within agreed deadlines.
  • Conduct hydrodynamic installation analysis (lift, lay, lower, tie-in, hookup, etc.) for subsea structures, pipelines, flexibles, and spools.
  • Import and interpret vessel RAOs and related hydrodynamic/load case data.



Planning & Coordination:

  • Collaborate with the Technical Manager or Tender Lead to define deliverables and meet project objectives.
  • When designated lead for a scope, break down deliverables into clear goals and manage execution by assigned team members.
  • Ensure effective coordination with internal and external stakeholders across engineering, procurement, and offshore operations.



Team Collaboration & Leadership:

  • Lead assigned work scopes when required, guiding junior engineers and ensuring efficient progress.
  • Contribute to improving the interface between installation and analysis engineering disciplines.
  • Support hiring by reviewing and assessing candidates when requested.



Change Management:

  • Monitor and incorporate changes to data, methods, vessels, or procedures into ongoing analysis work.



Quality & Compliance:

  • Deliver work in accordance with the company's Business Management System (BMS), ensuring accuracy, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Adhere to relevant industry codes, standards, and client specifications.



Support to Operations:

  • Provide technical support during offshore execution phases when required.
Job requirements

Education:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Marine, Structural, Offshore Engineering).
  • A PhD with a specialization in flexible pipe systems or riser technology is highly advantageous.



Experience:

  • Significant industry experience with a technical focus on subsea flexible and riser installations, including global analysis and offshore operations.
  • Extensive experience with hydrodynamic analysis and subsea lift operations, covering both shallow and deepwater environments.
  • Proven track record in executing complex installation scopes for subsea pipelines, spools, flexibles, and structures.



Technical Proficiency:

  • Expert-level proficiency with one or more of the following analysis tools:
  • OrcaFlex
  • SIMO
  • RIFLEX
  • In-depth understanding of and ability to apply industry codes and standards such as:
  • DNV-ST-N001, DNV-RP-F109, NORSOK, API RP 2A/2RD
  • Strong knowledge of offshore transportation and installation methods, including vessel operations, seafastening, lifting, lowering, lay operations, and tie-ins.
  • Familiarity with offshore execution support, including review of procedures, operational input, and troubleshooting.



Additional Skills:

  • Experience or working knowledge of Python or similar programming/scripting languages for automating analysis workflows or data post-processing is beneficial.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving, and design validation techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical details clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge development within the team.
