Location: Chelmsford, Essex. Salary: £48,530 - £57,095 per annum. Full Time. Expires 09/07/2026.

Place Services, a multidisciplinary consultancy within Essex County Council, delivers environmental and planning services across the region.

Role Overview

As a Principal Ecological Consultant you will act as an authoritative subject matter expert, co leading our ecology offer alongside two existing Principals. The role requires advanced technical expertise, substantial post qualification experience, and strong professional accreditation, including Full Membership of the CIEEM.

Responsibilities

• Own a diverse and challenging portfolio of development management consultations.
• Deliver high quality ecological assessments (PEAR, HRA, EcIA) and habitat/species management plans.
• Lead and coordinate specialist teams across large scale projects from conception to completion.
• Analyse, interpret and present complex ecological data, using GIS and other tools to inform decision making.
• Provide commercial oversight: business development, bid winning and managing high value client relationships.
• Mentor and develop team members, fostering a high performing and supportive culture.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
• Extensive post qualification experience in planning and development management, preferably from a local planning authority.
• Full Membership of CIEEM or equivalent professional accreditation.
• Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, policy, standards and guidance.
• Excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills.
• Commercial awareness and proven track record of delivering projects within budget and specification.
• Valid driving licence and access to a vehicle, or ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role.
