We have an exciting opportunity for a clinical, counselling or health psychologist to work in a leading adult oncology and haematology service. The post holder will be closely supported by colleagues within an established and highly valued and supportive psychological health service.
You will have a wide range of direct clinical work covering all parts of the adult cancer pathway across different tumour sites and teams. You will be offered opportunities to contribute to the compassionate care of staff, through clinical supervision, as well as supporting our wide ranging training programme.
There are excellent facilities to support this role, with dedicated administrative support and clinical space within Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre and Weston General Hospital. We offer a very supportive Psychological Health Services group across the Trust, with strong links to regional and national networks.
As a large department Psychological Health Services provides applied psychology services to a wide range of specialist multidisciplinary teams. Although the current recruitment is for a specific post, we welcome applications and enquiries from those who are interested in wider opportunities within our portfolio. As a way to support individual development, growth of expertise and service priorities, successful applicants may benefit from opportunities to work into other clinical areas through discussion and planning with their line manager and head of service.
Main duties of the job The total hours currently available are 33.75 (0.9wte). If full time hours are desirable there may be opportunities to pick up additional hours on a fixed term basis in the family service and we may appoint more than one person.
This role covers the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Hospital (BHOC) and Weston General Hospital (WGH) and therefore requires the post holder to travel to both sites. The role requires availability on Tuesdays and Fridays, other days to be negotiated based on working patterns and sites. Candidates invited to interview will be asked to express their preference for working hours.
Interviews will be conducted on Wednesday 27th August.

- To provide specialist psychological services, including assessment, formulation and implementation of psychological interventions for people over the age of 16 affected by cancer and haematological disorders. To deliver these services in both ward-based and out-patient settings as needed. To undertake or support research and audit relevant to care pathways.
- To propose changes for service development, guidelines and protocols relevant to psychological health across these care pathways to the relevant Specialist Clinical Psychologist or Head of Services.

Person specification Qualifications and Training
- Postgraduate qualification in clinical, counselling or health psychology, recognised for registration by the HCPC as Practitioner Clinical or Counselling Psychologist, or about to qualify as a clinical, counselling or health psychologist
- HCPC registered as required in QT1 (or in progress)
- Experience of clinical work with adults and older adults providing psychological assessments and interventions
- Experience of presenting psychological formulations, assessments and interventions to multi-professional teams
- Experience of formal teaching/training to health and other professionals
- Experience of clinical work in an acute physical health setting
- Experience of clinical work with end of life patients
- Able to assess the psychological needs of patients and families with a chronic illness in a physical health setting. This will include the use of standardised, psychometric tests and assessments.
- Able to generate systemic and individual formulations and interventions based on applying psychological theory to the complex information generated by the family, health and social care systems
- Able to demonstrate an understanding of the psychological implications of a cancer diagnosis for patients and families across the lifespan
- Able to demonstrate an understanding of the roles of a psychologist in relation to a patient/ their family/ the staff teams/ and the wider organisational systems around them
- Advanced communication skills with the ability to provide and receive highly complex and sensitive information in a developmentally and culturally appropriate manner and in highly emotive situations, including end of life care
- Ability to communicate highly complex psychological information to staff in an accessible manner (written, verbal, electronic)
- Able to record and provide information and data pertaining to clinical work, activity and outcomes (written, electronic)
- Able to demonstrate successful use of strategies to prioritise and manage time when there are conflicting demands
- Able to demonstrate examples of successful commitment to team working
