Posted 2 hours 43 minutes ago by Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V.
Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG), Cologne
The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) conducts basic research on the governance of modern societies, investigating the interrelation between social, economic, and political action. Building on economic sociology and comparative/international political economy, the Institute develops empirically grounded theories of modern economies.
Our new Research Group on Technology and Statehood, directed by Prof. (UiB) Dr. Regine Paul, examines:
- How states articulate technological competitiveness projects and why these vary across time, space, and technologies.
- The stakes when states enter global tech races, with possible foci on:
- Public governance of/with AI stacks, quantum computing/communication infrastructures, or digital twins in public administration.
- Empirical projects in decolonized contexts (e.g., Brazil, India) are particularly welcome.
As a Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d), you will:
- Develop and execute a two-year research project within the group's scope, based on your own proposal.
- Contribute to the Institute's international, interdisciplinary research environment in Cologne (on-site presence required).
- Doctoral degree in the social sciences (sociology, political science, or related fields), completed no more than three years before the starting date (March/April 2027).
- Scholarly excellence, demonstrated through:
- A research proposal (max. 3 pages) outlining your project.
- Success in the selection interview (October 8, 2026).
- Collaborative and collegial approach to research.
- Two-year contract (TVöD E13) with excellent working conditions in a leading social science research institute.
- Support for work-life balance and equality of opportunity, including accommodations for disabilities and family needs.
- A diverse, inclusive workplace committed to cutting-edge research.
- Submit your application online (in English or German) by September 18, 2026, 12:00 PM (UTC+2). Email applications will not be considered.
