Course Description: This course prepares students for a freelance career in North America-including a detailed study of current industry showcases, financing of productions, advanced negotiation, technical production (from the artist's perspective), self-advocacy, and US work visas. Students will understand the artistic demands, finances, lifestyle, and carbon impact of a freelance touring career.

Class Schedule: Mondays 11am-1pm in the Winter term

January to April 2026

Salary: $9,820.70

Estimated Course Enrollment: 20

TA support: none

Qualifications: Doctoral degree in performance. Experience as a freelance artist throughout Canada and the United States in a variety of different performance settings. Experience teaching music at the post-secondary level.

Duties: Define course objectives and materials; provide clear guidelines on course requirements and regulations; teach classes as scheduled; administer and evaluate student assignments; prepare and submit final grade in accordance with policy. Maintain reasonable hours of student consultation outside scheduled class hours.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.

It is understood that some announcements of vacancies are tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolment. Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
