An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Paediatric Critical Care team.

Band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse posts provide the opportunity to include rostered shifts across PCCU, Outreach and Retrieval services as negotiated between the post holder/Senior Nursing Team, and on completion of appropriate competencies.

Post holders will be expected to work a minimum of 23hrs per week across days, nights and weekend shifts.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide clinical leadership ensuring a high standard of individualised nursing and family centred care is delivered to critically ill children.
  • To work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, communicating effectively with all levels of medical and nursing staff.
  • To uphold PCCU's Nursing Philosophy of Care.
  • To effectively manage PCCU on a day-to-day basis, in the absence of a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

Senior Nurses within PCCU at Band 6 and above have the opportunity to work across the retrieval and outreach services in addition to PCCU on a roster basis on completion of appropriate competencies.

Paediatric Critical Care (PCC) at OUHincludes 17 co-located Level 2 and 3 critical care beds, delivering a wide range of specialist services to patients from Oxfordshire and the wider Thames Valley and Wessex Paediatric Critical Care Operational Delivery Network (TVW PCC ODN). We are a leading Neurosurgical and Major Trauma Centre and have a vast number of medical and surgical specialities. The unit is undergoing an exciting period of estate and workforce development and investment, with a move into newly built unit within the next 5 years.

SORT Retrieval ServiceOUH PCC Services include the SORT (Southampton Oxford Retrieval Team) service, delivered in collaboration with Southampton across TVW PCC ODN. It is staffed by doctors, ACPs and nurses from both Oxford and Southampton, with Oxford providing a retrieval team 24/7.

Critical Care Outreach Serviceis a team of experienced nurses who support all healthcare professionals in the assessment and management of unwell children across the children's hospital, emergency department, and neonatal unit, following up and supporting children and families following discharge.

Education, Development and Trainingis provided through a structured competency-based development programme, and we are piloting an inhouse PCC L3 specialist course for nursing staff. Clinical and leadership career development pathways are available. We have a growing team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners who work across PCCU and SORT services at OUH.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be able to work well within the team and be willing to work a mixed shift pattern including days and nights across the whole week. They will have at least 3 years post registration experience with a relevant course for Paediatric Critical Care. They will be a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual with excellent clinical and communication skills, with an ability to lead and motivate others. They will also enjoy teaching and supporting junior staff as well as pre and post registration students.

Person specification Qualifications
  • RSCN (Child)/RN (Adult) NMC Registered
  • Recognised UK Paediatric Critical Care Course (e.g. PCCS or HEI accredited)
  • Degree level study or working towards a degree
  • Evidence of commitment to teaching staff and students.
Experience
  • Relevant Critical Care nursing experience
  • Demonstrates knowledge of value & use of research findings.
Personal Qualities
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates awareness of the qualities required of staff working in Critical Care.
  • Insight into managerial issues in relation to people and resources.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Evidence of clinical knowledge in area of speciality, and excellence in practice.
  • Experience of leading and supporting a team in clinical area.
  • Knowledge/experience of: - audit in practice - implementation of quality improvement measures - risk management

  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
