The purpose of this role is to work as a member of the orthopaedic team demonstrating expertise in casting and plastering techniques.
To provide technical and professional support in other clinical areas within the Trust.
The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a high standard of care, to both adult and paediatric patients, including undertaking specialist casting, bracing and splinting procedures.
The post holder will be expected to work unsupervised using their own initiative and make appropriate clinical decisions.
The post holder would be expected to test new products and equipment and report findings.
The post holder will need to hold the British Orthopaedic Association Casting Certificate
Main duties of the job- To be competent in the application, adjustment and removal of all types of casts, in adults and paediatrics, as prescribed by a clinician.
- To participate in the assessment, planning and evaluation of care for the patient who is requiring casting or splinting referring to the clinician as required.
- To assess different initial conditions and provide advice to clinicians on appropriate treatment and materials.
- To obtain informed consent from patients/carers when carrying out care.
- To provide expert specialist technical support and advice throughout the Trust and a comprehensive casting service for the Fracture and Orthopaedic clinics.
- To provide specialist casting for Paediatrics, Diabetes/Podiatry, Wards and Theatres.
- To assist in the manipulation of fractures under local anaesthetic, prior to and during application of casts.
- To carry out appropriate basic wound care, including dressings, suture/clip and k-wire removal.
- To promote and maintain effective communication, both verbal and written
- To maintain accurate and timely records of care in accordance to Trust guidelines.
- To develop and implement audits within the department to improve service provision.
- To participate in the teaching/training of nurses and medical staff in application and removal of casts.
- To communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team.
