Orthopaedic Knee Consultant

UHBW's Orthopaedic department offers a full range of adult trauma and orthopaedic services. The role is based primarily at Weston General Hospital, part of the Bristol Hospital NHS group.
ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will perform weekly elective operating lists and clinics, regular trauma lists, fracture/acute clinics and the Virtual Fracture Clinic. Duties include ward rounds, resident doctor supervision, on ward teaching and a regular weekend rota (1 in 8). The post will include 8.5 days on the District Clinical Committee and 1.5 days on the Specialist Partners Arrangement.
Additionally, ensuring compliance with Trust policies, timeliness of referrals and discharge summaries, DNA management and paperwork completion, and flexibly managing caseloads to meet national and local priorities such as maximum waiting times. Secretarial support and shared office space are provided.
Qualifications & Training- Fully registered with GMC.
- Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) or equivalent / Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview.
- Candidates may be within 6 months of gaining CCT at interview (not applicable to CESR applications).
- Must be on the GMC's Specialist Register before starting the appointment.
- Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD, PhD) or equivalent.
- Demonstrable surgical training and interest in knee surgery, including arthroplasty and soft tissue knee surgery, and general trauma surgery experience.
- Evidence of first class professional practice in adult trauma and orthopaedics with continued practice and skill development.
- Fellowship level training in elective knee surgery.
- Practice fully and independently in trauma and orthopaedic surgery.
- Practice independently on the adult on call trauma rota.
- Make consultant level clinical decisions.
- Broad IT skills relevant to the role.
- Experience in teaching.
- Understanding of clinical governance responsibilities.
- Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation.
- Positive approach to evidence based practice.
- Participation in CPD and evidence of continued development.
- Knowledge of research principles.
- Evidence of involvement in research.
- Peer reviewed publications.
- Capacity to enhance the academic profile of the department.
- Experience teaching medical students and supervising trainees.
- Knowledge of multidisciplinary teaching.
- Formal teaching qualification.
- Management training experience and learning.
- Organise efficient specialist service operation.
- Manage consultant workload effectively.
- Independent consultancy practice.
- Leadership and responsibility evidence.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Knowledge of NHS management structures.
