Job Description
MT05 Senior Clinical Research Fellow - Renal Genomics

This role aims to contribute to the development of the Renal Genomics service in the Department of Nephrology. Working closely with the Renal Genetics team (Consultant Nephrologists, Consultant Clinical Geneticist, Clinical Nurse Specialist and members of the clinical and research laboratories).

Hampstead is part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, one of five sites within the trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will liaise with the laboratory genetics team at the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub (based at Great Ormond Street Hospital) to assist with interpretation of Whole Genome Sequence data in order to provide a diagnosis to people with rare kidney diseases.

They will also contribute to the Renal Genetics and Polycystic Kidney Disease clinics, providing results of genomic testing to patients and assisting in the delivery of newly licensed treatments for rare kidney diseases.

The post holder will gain experience as sub investigator in Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials of new medications for rare kidney diseases.

In addition, the post holder will spend one evening a week as specialist registrar responsible for renal admissions to the Royal Free Hospital, assessing and treating emergency admissions under the supervision of the on call nephrology consultant.

Education and Professional Qualifications
  • Membership of relevant Royal College or overseas equivalent
  • Good Clinical Practice Training Certificate
  • Higher research degree
Skills and aptitudes
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to take on tasks and responsibilities in a multi professional team and work effectively and sensitively within it
  • Ability to interpret and explain genetic test reports
  • Proven ability in relevant subject areas
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision
  • Analysis and interpretation of whole genome sequencing data
Personal qualities and attributes
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload
  • High ethical and professional standards in research, education and clinical practice
Other requirements
  • GMC registration or eligibility for GMC registration
  • Member of Medical Defence Organisation
  • Knowledge of the Clinical Governance framework of the NHS (including Research Governance) and ability to act within these parameters
Experience
  • Relevant experience in nephrology as a specialist registrar
  • Treating patients and families with genetic kidney diseases
  • Experience in related medical specialities including paediatrics or genetics
  • Experience in data collection, management, analysis and presentation
  • Work in a clinical trials environment
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Involvement in the clinical audit process and an understanding of the aims thereof
