Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dynamic MHST Team Manager (Band 7) to lead our Mental Health Support Teams for Education settings.

As Team Manager, you'll oversee high quality, evidence based care, support staff development, and drive service improvement. You'll collaborate with education providers, local authorities, and partners to ensure integrated, effective support for children, young people, and their families.

Main duties of the job

As MHST Team Manager you'll lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team delivering high quality, evidence based mental health support to children and young people. You'll oversee clinical assessments, risk management, and care planning, ensuring robust record keeping and data quality. You'll manage caseloads, support the coordination of referrals, and facilitate regular team meetings. Through clinical and line management supervision you'll drive staff development, recruitment, and performance. Working in partnership with schools, local authorities, and community stakeholders, you'll contribute to service improvement, audits, and outcome monitoring. You'll also support national and local priorities aligned with Trust objectives, champion safeguarding and equality, and promote continuous professional development, helping shape the future of MHST services.

This post is based in Stockport, with the team base located at Heathfield House, Cale Green, Stockport, SK2 6RA. As the team typically works within education settings four days per week, the role requires regular travel across the locality.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds a recognised professional registration (e.g. nursing, social work, HCPC) or is a qualified Educational Mental Health Practitioner, with current registration.
  • Has substantial post qualification experience in child and adolescent mental health services, MHST, or adult mental health settings.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership in managing and supervising multidisciplinary teams, including overseeing clinical assessments, risk management, and care planning.
  • Is confident in providing both clinical and line management supervision, supporting staff development, recruitment, and performance.
  • Has highly developed knowledge of mental health issues affecting children and young people and is skilled in implementing evidence based interventions and service improvement.
  • Is committed to partnership working with schools, local authorities, and community stakeholders, and to promoting safeguarding, equality, and continuous professional development.
Person specification Qualifications
  • Registered core profession (social work, nursing), OR Child and Young Person Wellbeing Practitioner OR Educational mental health practitioner and registered with BABCP/BPS.
Experience
  • Substantial post qualification experience of working within a health delivered child and adolescent mental health service or Mental health support teams or adult mental health services.
  • Experience in the provision of clinical and line management supervision and annual appraisal.
Knowledge
  • Highly developed knowledge of mental health issues in children and young people.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and National Policies in relation to children and young people.
  • Highly developed knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions with this client group.
  • Working knowledge of NICE guidance in the treatment of mental health problems for children and young people.
  • Knowledge of risk management issues.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with young people with learning disability.
  • Evidence of post qualifying training courses/certificates.
Skills
  • Evidence of the ability to lead, motivate and manage a group.
  • Ability to manage own emotions and deal with others in highly charged situations.
  • Experience of governance processes, including responding to complaints and completing investigations following incidents.
  • Ability to manage the performance of staff in a consistent and sensitive manner.
  • Ability to produce written reports that are clear, unambiguous and produced with agreed timescales.
  • Ability to identify and manage risk in individuals presenting with mental health needs.
  • Ability to work in situations that are often highly emotionally charged and where individuals may be antagonistic/aggressive.
