Overview of role: UPMC are currently recruiting for Medical Registrar to join our team at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford.To provide care high quality medical care to patients admitted through the Medical Admissions Unit (MAU) and to any other patients in the hospital requiring medical review within the scope of a Medical Registrar at UPMC Whitfield Hospital. The post holder will:Offer medical consults on surgical patients as required.Manage the care of medical patients from admission to discharge under the direction of the Consultant Physician.Management of medical information to support insurance claims.Provide support in the management of claims being submitted to the relevant insurer for payment where required

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Toact under the supervision of the Medical Consultants in the provision of aMedicine service and to support the Consultants in their duties.
  • To admit patients to the Medical Floor.
  • To attend daily ward rounds with the medical team.
  • Take handover of patients so that continuity ofcare is ensured and immediate decisions are made and orders written.
  • To review patients on a regular basis inaccordance with the plan of care made at the beginning of the shift andinform the consultant of any issues or problems.
  • Document review findings in clinical notes in atimely and legible manner.
  • To participate in family meetings when required.
  • To respond to any adverse occurrences e.g.injuries, falls, sudden illnesses etc. suffered by patients, visitors orstaff.
  • To contribute to quality improvement; riskmanagement initiatives and policy development so that the overall InternalMedicine Service is of the highest quality and reflective of bestpractice.
  • To assist in the education of colleagues andstaff.
  • To participate in work related projects at UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
  • To act and behave professionally and perform one'sduties in a manner that optimises patient care and protects and enhancesthe reputation of UPMC WhitfieldUPMC Whitfield Hospital.
  • To adhere to Hospital Policies and Procedures.
  • To comply with Health and Safety Regulations,ensuring safe working practices in a safe working environment.
  • To undertake any other duties that may berequired, which could include assisting medical colleagues throughout thehospital and acting as a resource for more junior colleagues.
  • The post holder will workwith all members of the multidisciplinary team, medical and non-medical toprovide a seamless service for patients.
  • Diagnose and treatpatients under the direction of the consultant, surgical and medicalstaff.
  • Will document patients'assessment, history and physical on admission and write appropriate followup comments in case notes in line with the Assessment of Patient Policy.
  • Complete a typed updetailed discharge summary for each patient to be approved by theConsultant Physician for submission to GPs and Insurers.
  • Will conduct dailyre-assessment on in-patients as advised by the consultant and/or nursingstaff
  • To be the lead in codeblue and clinical emergency calls whilst carrying a pager on their personthroughout their shift
  • Carry out clinicalprocedures as requested by Consultants 1. Administer IV drugs 2. Cannulate/site IV lines 3. Venepuncture 4. Catheterise malepatients 5. ECGs
  • Lead nursing staff in emergency/cardiac arrest procedures.
  • Discuss care with patients and relatives as appropriate.
  • To ensure discharge summaries are completed as per Discharge Policy requested by Consultants and/or nursing staff.
  • Further own knowledge of diagnosis and management.
  • Participate in programmes of research, education and training.
  • Management of medical information to support insurance claims. Provide support to the administration team prior to claims being submitted to the relevant insurer for payment where required
Medication Management
  • Work in full compliance with all MedicationManagement Policies relevant to the role.
  • Verify each patient's current medication liston admission to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Reconcile the patient's stated or documentedmedication history with the original prescription order.
Accreditation
  • Workcollaboratively with the organisation and the wider multidisciplinary teamto prepare for JCIAccreditation standards, ensuring ongoing compliance with CHKS and HIQA requirements.
Training and Audit
  • To complete one ClinicalAudit on an annual basis. Clinical Audit can be defined as 'the systematicreview and evaluation of current practice with reference to research basedstandards to improve patient care' IMC
  • A team approach may betaken to the selected Clinical Audit, under the guidance of the Medicalteam.
  • All members of staff areexpected to attend mandatory training sessions on an annual basis or asappropriate.
  • All member of staff areexpected to participate in any in-house or external training or educationsessions appropriate to their position.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Registrar's are requiredunder their IMC Registration to participate in continuing professionaldevelopment. From time to time theHospital will host educational events which will generate CPD points.
Expectations
  • Lead the response to emergency situationsacross the hospital site, ensuring timely and effective clinical intervention.
  • Participate as an active member of the DeterioratingPatient Committee and contribute to Sepsis auditing and relatedquality improvement initiatives for same
  • Review patients, visitors, and stafffollowing any incident or accident, providing appropriate clinical assessmentand follow up.
  • Complete incident reporting in line withhospital policy, including accurate and timely completion of Accident andIncident forms.
  • Maintain comprehensive, legible, andcontemporaneous case notes documenting all aspects of patient assessment,treatment, and clinical decision making.
  • Remain familiar with and adhere to allrelevant hospital protocols, guidelines, and clinical pathways.
  • Engage in hospital wide initiatives aimed atimproving the quality, safety, and efficiency of patient care.
  • Demonstrate cost effective clinical practicewhile ensuring that patient safety and quality of care are never compromised.
  • Model professional behaviour that reflectsthe values and standards of the hospital.

General
  • Through the course of the working day or week there maybe a requirement to work in other areas of the hospital in line with patient requirements as requested by your line manager/deputy or nurse management.
  • Staff must produce satisfactory documentary evidence of all training and experience claimed by them, if required to do so by the organisation.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Applicants must be fully registered with Medical Council of Ireland.
  • Up to date certification in BLS & ACLS
  • Preferable Qualification in PALS-Willingness to undertake same
  • Experienceat Registrar level in an acute Hospital setting.
  • Evidence of continuing professionaldevelopment
  • Sufficientmedical diagnostic and surgical experience and the capability to fulfil thefunctions of the post
