Job Description
About ERM

ERM is a leading global sustainability consultancy, established over 50 years ago with a goal of helping organisations build a sustainable future. With more than 8,000 people worldwide, we support clients to deliver meaningful change and long term value.

Low Carbon Solutions Team

Our Low Carbon Solutions (LCS) team comprises 100+ experts in sustainable energy, working across energy networks, smart systems, low-carbon buildings, transport, hydrogen, fuels, chemicals, energy policy, sustainability assessment, and innovation. The team advises network operators, governments, developers, investors and corporates on delivering and operating low-carbon energy systems.

Decarbonisation - Electricity Networks & Energy Systems

Energy networks, particularly electricity transmission and distribution, are critical to delivering Net Zero. Energy systems thinking - spanning generation, networks, demand, and markets - is essential to ensure reliable and efficient operation as the system decarbonises.

The Role

As a Managing Consultant, you will play a central role in delivering high-impact projects and supporting growth of our electricity networks and energy systems offering.

  • Lead the delivery of complex projects, managing small teams and ensuring high-quality outputs

  • Provide strategic and technical advice to clients on electricity networks, markets, and decarbonisation

  • Combine technical expertise with strong client engagement and commercial awareness

  • Play an active role in business development, including shaping opportunities and winning work

  • Be comfortable taking ownership of project delivery, developing client relationships, and contributing to growth of a high-performing team

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead project delivery, managing small teams to produce high-quality, insight-led outputs across electricity networks, markets, and energy systems

  • Engage clients effectively, acting as a trusted point of contact and communicating complex technical findings clearly to a range of stakeholders

  • Drive business development, contributing to and leading proposals, identifying new opportunities, and supporting growth of client relationships

  • Oversee technical analysis, including research, market assessment, and techno-economic modelling, ensuring rigour and consistency

Skills and Experience

  • Strong experience in the energy sector, with a focus on electricity networks and/or electricity markets (gained in consultancy, industry, or a regulatory environment)

  • Demonstrated experience managing projects and leading small teams

  • Proven track record of contributing to or leading work that wins business development activities

  • Strong client-facing skills, including experience leading discussions and presenting to senior stakeholders

  • Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. engineering, physical sciences, economics)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Clear commitment to sustainability and the energy transition

  • Advantageous but not essential: experience with modelling tools and/or programming (e.g. Python)

  • Electrical engineering background or experience with power system analysis tools

  • Broader energy systems experience (e.g. hydrogen, heat, flexibility, whole-system analysis)

Benefits

We offer a collegiate and collaborative working culture, a competitive salary, and the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of the energy transition. Hybrid working arrangements are available.
