Locum Palliative Care Consultant

We are hoping to recruit a locum palliative care consultant to join our team of consultants at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT).This role is to support the Specialist Palliative Care (SPC) services at Charing Cross Hospital working with a team of consultant colleagues supported by a team of experienced SPC Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) and resident doctors.This post is a 7PA post.

This post offers the opportunity to work for ICHNT.There are opportunities for service development, quality improvement, research, ethics roles, education and training which can be guided by the team vision and the interests of the successful applicant.

ICHNT SPC is an advisory and support service providing SPC to patients (including those attending A & E) across Hammersmith Hospital (HH), Charing Cross Hospital (CXH), and St Mary's Hospital (SMH).ICHNT SPC supports one of the largest acute trusts in the country, with a major oncology inpatient and outpatient service, major trauma unit, a large number of intensive care beds, specialist renal and haematology services and cardiac services. There are excellent opportunities for clinical experience and learning.

Main duties of the job

This post will be based at CXH, a teaching hospital with 491 beds. Palliative care works closely with oncology, acute medicine, medicine for the elderly and intensive care. Potential areas for development include increasingin-reachto A and E and ongoing work integrating palliative care in the ICU, as well as the development of an outpatient service.

SPC is well integrated with other departments and specialist teams. One of the roles of palliative care is to support the care of patients with complex medical problems towards the end of life, supporting patients to meet their preferred place of care and death, and helping to relieve the pressure on acute services.SPC champion end of life care across ICHNT and work very closely with the End of Life (EOL) Team (EOL Clinical lead, lead nurse and practice educators). SPC work alongside the treating teams to support decisions on direction of care, advance care planning and promote the use of the universal care plan.

Qualifications

• On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
• GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
• Appropriate Royal College Membership
• Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
• Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues
• Knowledge of finance/budgets
• Management of staff

Teaching & Training

• Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff

Audit

• Understanding of principles of clinical audit and evidence of recent active participation in QI / audit

Language

• Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements

Academic achievements including research/publications

• Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Knowledge/skills

• Understand and be competent at treatment of all stages of SPC
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of treatment regimens and research (CPD)
• IT Skills and computer literacy
